Today we welcome our fourteenth guest mix selection - this time from Melbourne-based DJ, cultural connector, mercurial tastemaker and proprietor behind the burgeoning outernational mix series @undertheapricottree, Nathaniel.

In a sea of head-banging mix series, Under The Apricot Tree has become one of our essential stops for transformative outernational listening, showcasing diverse experimental music from around the world. Not only does it consistently cater for moods not often covered by other platforms, but it provides DJs an opportunity to express other shades and sides to their tastes away from the club. As such, they’ve welcomed international luminaries like Indonesia’s Midnight Runners alongside Antipodean selectors admired more locally to their Melbourne base. Curation doesn’t stop with the music. Global connectivity, metaphysical traveling and transitional listening habits have helped form an aesthetic that’s both a creative and comforting accompaniment to the mixes.

Behind it all is Nathaniel Rose, the unassuming and studious record collector who has built something that both listeners and DJs are championing in equal measure. Rarely one to step to the fore, we welcome the opportunity to explore his recent listening habits, detailing what we love about the UTAT philosophy and aesthetic.

A hypnotic, mystical theme seeps through this mind-bender of a guest mix, which is essentially an intriguing souvenir of Nathaniel’s interest in the literature and music of the post-Soviet world of the 1980s and 90s. Estonian psych, Slavic improv and Eastern-European night music are sewn together in a dreamlike, cosmic tapestry, crafting a unique cultural geography of landscapes and atmospheres: real and imagined, natural and man-made.
