There’s no denying it’s been a time of deep reflection, on an individual level for us all and, of course, for our scene and its artists, promoters, agents and you guys and gals. In taking away our dance floors, and so much more, COVID nudged us to review, reflect, reminisce and re-assess, on multiple levels and in numerous ways.

As for us, we’ve certainly thought about the part we want to play in our scene going forward, reflecting on our values and refining our vision. More of this to come.

What’s been going on inside the minds of artists at such a challenging time has been a big curiosity for us. It’s therefore a huge honour to bring you this very special On the 5th Day feature, featuring a beautifully sincere and open written “reflections” from our previous resident and cherished friend, Svreca (aka Enrique Mena), together with a dynamic, raw and truly unique trip down memory lane from the man himself, in the form of an extended segment of his 2014 FRUE performance at Unit in Tokyo.

As you’ll read, Japan holds a very special place in Enrique’s heart and this night, and the creative freedom he experienced was not to be forgotten, for him or the music lovers fortunate enough to be there.

A pure, perfect, dynamic Svreca moment, oozing with originality and the Svreca flair we've grown to love.

Next up in our mix series is our co-founder Marius Bø. Marius' musical journey finds its origins nestled amidst the Norwegian forests. It is here, between the trees and rustling leaves, that his sound took root, hosting and playing parties deep in the woods, since the first gatherings back in 2017. From hazy braindance to high-energy vibrations in mist-shrouded forests, balmy shores and dimly-lit basements - with appearances in clubs like Pawnshop, Bassiani and Macadam, to festivals like Monument and Organik - Marius' music takes a gentle yet firm grip on the soul, all with an organic and trippy spirit, resonating diverse settings from intimate club settings to verdant outdoor scenes.

In this episode, Marius takes us on a two-hour trip, connecting the dots of old school psychedelic records mixed with forthcoming and unreleased bits. Expect acid-infused grooves, warm basslines and trippy arpeggios weaving and rising seamlessly, creating a spiralling euphoria that works both the body and mind.

Smoke machine podcast has finally come to a milestone setting 50th release; not only we had to thank all the audiences’ support, and also all the participating artists. Our 50th podcast release is a very formidable mix from natural/electronic.system., this release was planned very long time ago, because we knew their music never disappoint. We had to especially thank the mnml ssgs crew, for their timeless top quality past natural/electronic.system. mixes, and for inviting n.e.s to Tokyo this March, the 7 hour event at Module and the 3 hour event in Dommune became some of the best show this year, which we were part of it, from deep, psychedelic to enchanting melodies blending perfectly together, all so seamlessly and enjoyable no one would want to miss any second of it, and that left us with a unforgettable experience and a high respect to them. We just have to let you have the same wonderful experiences.

In this mix you can hear a large quantity of futuristic sounds which you had never heard from the previous Smoke Machine mix, you will dance to the rhythm, you can close your eyes and imagining that the natural/electronic.system. is coming to our ORGANIK2012 outdoor party. Listen to this mix carefully, its pure beauty will cure your bruises and sooth your pains inside your heart… especially in an outdoor environment. The unsettling terrain of Evigt Mörker's world can be broken up into a few frenetic parts that give the overall impression of a serene habitat. There's the otherworldly foreground of his techno works that are blissfully psychedelic as well as carefully structured for the most subtly disorientating shifts, and hovering amongst this is his wholesome grasp on the purpose and consequence of melody. Together, this is Evigt Mörker's deadly and addictive mix.

Hailing from Sweden, some initial forays into bands in his youth went hand-in-hand with an early exposure to techno. Yet it was the illegal rave scene in Stockholm that would prove to be most formative. The circuit of DJing and parties soon fed into the need to create a platform from which to work, and so the identity and label Evigt Mörker came into being in 2013. The first three releases cemented Evigt Mörker's ability to rouse melodic dynamics out of an ambient setting. Whether settling and fixating on a rhythmic pattern, or shuffling through different emotions, often these tracks would career into rapturous dancefloor pieces. It didn't take long until the formidable Semantica Records tapped him for a release, which produced the stunning EP, 'Helmet of Bones.' From this point, Evigt Mörker would come under the austere wing of Northern Electronics. Two terse yet incandescent EPs, along with a fourth release on his own label, have charged the air for his debut album, 'Krona'. Appearing on Northern Electronics, a brooding intensity defines the album, as well as a technical dexterity for carving dissonance into lush techno tools.

For those that have witnessed Evigt Mörker live or as DJ, a different side to his recorded output comes into play. Often far more forceful than his releases, there's an energetic and rhythmic power reserved for these moments. It's perhaps this versatility that's kept him in such high demand as a remixer. Taken to the other end of the spectrum, Evigt Mörker's live shows are capable of elegant ambient pieces, if holding a dancefloor down isn't the modus operandi.

It's with great pleasure to welcome long time dear friend Jonny Nash (@jonnynash) who in 2019 released 'Make A Wilderness' with us (MFM037). Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hey Jonny, welcome to the series. So, it's already been over a year ago since Make A Wilderness came out. How do you look back on that now? 

JN: In many ways Make A Wilderness marked the start of a new chapter for me, the first steps into new territory - a wilderness you could say! That record was really about exploring a simple question - what kind of sounds resonate with me, and why. I think the record was primarily an exercise in sound, and not necessarily in arrangements or songwriting. I felt it was necessary to open the doors to new sounds in this record, and I feel like I got pretty close to creating the album that I wanted to make. 

MFM: You went to different places to record specific instruments and in certain environments. Why? 

JN: It took me a long time to make the record, not in terms of actually writing the music, but determining what the instrumentation should be. I wanted a finely balanced mix of alien, unfamiliar sounds and organic human sounds, to somehow express a feeling of “ancient future”, the sense of floating in some timeless space that could be millions of years in the past or in the future. I found that the Cristal Baschet, was perfect for expressing this feeling of “deep time”. Capable of beautiful harmonics and also wonderful atonal textures, it was a central part of the album. I contrasted these sounds with familiar instruments such as piano, vibraphone and voice. It was very important to have some sparse elements of voice in the record to somehow keep it grounded on earth. 

MFM: Have you always been that interested in sound and sound sculpturing?

JN: Well, I’m a naturally curious person and I think my brain and also my ears are always developing and learning new things. I think that I am able to hear sound in a different way than I did a few years ago. A big switch from focussing on melody as the dominant element that catches my attention. Of course, melody is still a central element for me but I now spend alot of time thinking about timbre, the colour of the sound and how the distinctive character of a sound sits in context with other sounds in a given composition. New ways of hearing influenced the record and took me to a place where “sound sculpting” was of equal importance as deciding what chords and melodies to choose. 

MFM: You mentioned earlier that the past couple of months your label Melody As Truth got a lot support through digital sales. Does that have effect on your label vision and strategy?

JN: The switch towards digital and especially streaming does undoubtedly have an effect on how I think as a label owner. It is pretty clear that this is an important area of growth and although there are lots of issues with certain platforms and revenue models, I find it important to keep on top of what is going on and try to adapt. In the future I can see the label experimenting more with digital only releases, I think there are interesting areas to explore here. Quiet dynamic music cut on vinyl in 2020 often sounds worse than a WAV file to my ears. I also buy hardly any vinyl myself these days, it is expensive, taxing on the environment and often a form of object fetishism. The other side is that a physical object looks amazing, can sound great, gives full importance to the artwork and design, can be treasured and won’t be lost. So a physical object is almost like an insurance policy for not losing the music too. I guess I’m sitting somewhere in the middle.

MFM: Thanks for contributing your mix. Can you tell us a bit about it?
 
JN: The mix is pretty much a selection of music I have been enjoying or discovered this year. A few older favourites too. I had no idea except to make something that I would enjoy listening to whilst having a walk or reading in the morning.
