Screaming Out

When the countdown was complete, a clear theme emerged from people’s comments – ‘where’s Nightswimming?!’ It’s very evident not only do people love this song, many people regard it as one of the band’s best songs. Unfortunately, the audience love for the song was not reflected in the amount of performances, with the band only playing it 70 times in their career so it missed the top 100, coming it at number 114. Given the love for the song however, we’d be remiss not to feature it!
The first live performance came in Sydney, Australia very early on in the Monster tour. Here, Amanda Brown joined the band on stage to perform and played violin on the song. Amanda was formerly of the band The Go-Betweens, who supported R.E.M. on many shows in Australia and Europe in 1989, and lives in Sydney. Amanda also joined the band on ‘Country Feedback’, ‘Losing My Religion’ and ‘Everybody Hurts’. It was not played again on the tour until 15 November in Orlando, when Amanda again joined the band to perform the song. This was repeated at the final three shows of the tour in Atlanta.
The next performance came on 23 October 1998 on VH1 Storytellers in New York, where it was performed by Michael and Mike on piano, but Michael didn’t know all the words. In 1999 it was performed four times, 3 of them again in Atlanta, with Jun-Ching Lin on violin and Deborah Workman on oboe. A few days later it was performed again in Wantaugh, NY with Deni Bonet on violin.
The 2003 tour was your best chance to see it, when it was performed 31 times that year. After that it was played just once in 2004, 17 times in 2005, and 11 times in 2008, with the lucky audience in São Paulo, Brazil the last people to see it performed live.
Fun fact: Liner notes from the compilations are a great place to read some candid band thoughts about their songs. In the liner notes for ‘In Time’, Peter wrote of this song “Being competitive bastards that we are, Mike and I started auditioning chord changes and tunes for Michael. The two tunes of mine that Michael rejected eventually became 'Drive' and 'Try Not To Breathe.' Mike had a piano instrumental that he played to Michael. He listened once, nodded his head to hear it again, and on the second pass he sang the lyrics. It was 'Nightswimming,' exactly like the record we would record a year later. I was standing in the corner dumbfounded."
Michael further elaborated in the liner notes for ‘Part Lies, Part Truth, Part Garbage’: “There's a fairly autobiographical narrative to this one, and the part about the windshield really happened. The photograph on the dashboard taken years ago, turned around backwards so the windshield shows." He said: "That's exactly how I saw it, I'm pretty sure it was a pickup truck. I know Jem Cohen loves that line, and he made the most incredible film as a video for this song”. 
There’s many great performances of this song to choose from, but we’re going with the performance from 18 November 1995 in Atlanta, with Amanda Brown on violin. While Amanda did feature on ‘Road Movie’ on some other songs, this performance was omitted from the official video release.
