This mix was recorded in 2010 for the treasure trove which is promomixes.com. 
Promomixes 006 features my take on the early Belgian New Beat / EBM wave which hit Belgium between 1985 and .... well, depending on who you talk to it lasted maximum four or five years before it turned itself into a commercial, money-infested parody. But during those early years it was one of the most invigorating and creative moments in Belgium's musical nightlife history. The eclectic blend between 80ies New / Cold Wave, Electronic Body Music and fresh, homemade New Beat tunes was unique and happened only in Belgium. A strange country, indeed....

This mix was made with Antwerp's (in)famous Prestige club in mind. While I always found Prestige's music policy to be a bit on the safe side the place was important to me: it was the first real club I experienced from the inside. It definitely did awake something in me: a fascination for dance music, nightlife, and the intense hunger to be a part of it all.

The selection in this mix is made from a very personal perspective: my imaginary, perfect Prestige. Older (Belgian?) listeners will hear a lot of 'classics', newer listeners can go about and discover. Enjoy.

Biography:
Alexey Volkov has steadfastly pushed his hard-edged style of modern, industrial-rooted music since first appearing on The Hacker’s Zone label in 2009. Quickly picked up by the French EBM and techno legend Terence Fixmer for his Planete Rouge imprint, the artists are cut from similar cloth, both having found their way from the industrial and techno ideas of their early output, inspired by DAF, Downwards, and many others, to a more forceful interpretation of similar influences not fettered by the mid-2000s minimal vogue or the excesses of electro-clash. Also similarly, both artists have gradually risen as popular interests returned to those they remained behind. Volkov in particular made dramatic progress in the last few years, rising to worldwide notice on O’connor’s, Ruskin’s, Mendez’s Jealous God imprint after a string of well-received EPs for Fixmer’s label. His recent work is his most assured, experimental, and probing, bringing his industrial and EBM influences to the fore more than ever while probing the formal restraints of techno itself. Now a mature artist making stunning, contemporary music which is the best in his career, Alexey Volkov channels both modern and classic influences into a combination that demands notice for the foreseeable future.

Matthias Kunze had his first brush with house music a long time ago, in his hometown Halle (Saale). Together with his friends, he performed in several off-locations and started to gain interest in DJing. Currently he resides in Hamburg and plays clubs and festivals throughout Germany. 
 
The main source of his inspiration is Klangextase, a German podcast station he founded more than a decade ago. Through the years, Matthias has invited a lot of skilled artists across the world to share their music on the platform. In 2018, he went from local to global and ventured out to South Africa where he has played in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Matthias’ sound describes as deep, sometimes melancholic, combined with subtle highlights and a kicking beat, which makes everyone move. His musical journeys are always good for a surprise and leave the audience with a feeling of joy.
