This spring I haven't been to the island yet because the war has started. I thought about whether the war could take Muromets from me or spoil it? Maybe yes. But at the same time, no. Because this place didn't always exist. Muromets seems ancient, but in fact it is a young sandy island. It was built by the Dnipro river. It was not always in Kyiv.
So I realized that the importance of this place is not in the place itself, but behind it. Barbarians may come and burn down a house. But the one who built it will stay and build a new one. Barbarians can kill him too. But the Building will continue anyway.
Barbarians have no power because they can't build.

Влад Добровольский: «Сборку компиляции «Crystal World» мы начали пару месяцев назад, а в основе ее находится наша страсть к FM-синтезу. Одновременно мы исследовали способы применения в ней и традиционной азиатской перкуссии. В процессе стало понятно, что мы затронули богатую звуковым материалом жилу, и полноценное раскрытие стало возможно лишь в формате крупной формы.

Так появилась эта подборка релевантной моменту музыки, микс из двух частей — моей и Василия, и интерлюдия между ними. В каждой части музыкальный характер отличается, а гармоническая и структурная концепция остается неизменной на всем протяжении. 

Результат можно сравнить с проявлениями света — такими как отражения. 

Также эта работа навевает воспоминания о романе Джеймса Балларда под названием «Кристаллизованный мир». Автор описывает, как природа — растения, животные и люди — постепенно трансформируются в кристаллизованный мир. Они «застывают» и превращаются в драгоценные камни, которые сами становятся солнечным светом, набором фантастических световых спектров, а гармония миллионов отражений и порождает и уничтожает саму жизнь».

Vlad Dobrovolski: «This compilation of Crystal World was began a couple of months ago and it is based on our FM fm synthesis addiction. And with that, our investigation of the wide range of acoustic manifestations of traditional Asian percussion instruments. During the realisation it became clear that this extremely rich sound material would open up new possibilities, which could only be done justice in a large framework.

Thus, a cycle of electronic music emerged, which consists of two parts Vasiliy and I made and interlude between them. In each part, the musical character corresponds to different aspects, while the harmonic and structural concept remains constant throughout the cycle. The recording process and the many electronic transformations of compositions and their overtone-spectra led to very unusual musical structures.

The resulting unique merges were comparable to various manifestation of light — such as reflections and also reminded of a novel by J. G. Ballard title The Crystal World. The author describes how nature’s plans, animals and also humans gradually change into a crystal world. Everything «freezes» into crystals and precious stones, which in turn, transform sunlight into an environment of countless fantastic light-spectra.

The paradox is the perfect harmony of millions of reflections of light,
which is at the same time responsible for the birth of all the livings and destruction of life».

Fields Podcast 021: S A D «Crystal World And Divers Other Matters»

The reality around you suddenly turns into a beach bar called «Carousel». It smells of cypress, charcoal fish and cheap cigarettes. The lights are dancing on the sea surface. The dance floor is sticky because of all the alcohol spilled overnight. There are only you and a hugging drunk couple dancing there (he is a chubby man in a light coloured loose-fitting suit, he’s hardly pronouncing «I’m technically married, but …»; she is a petite brunette in a provocative short red dress). Somewhere on the embankment howls the siren of a police car. Moustached bartender puts your (well, whose else?) misted glass of beer with a swaying head of foam on the counter. He unequivocally bites his lower lip and for some reason you smiles broadly. It’s clearly that tonight you are going to his place. Everything is rapidly slipping away, dissolving in the darkness of the southern night. «Souvenir» is a mix series representing the repertoire of Soviet jazz performers. Series acquaints listeners with the legacy of all-original jazz bands which worked in USSR. Only on the verge of the sixties, Soviet musicians started to construct their own stylistic identity as a mean of alienating themselves from the American canon. Folklore sound and traditional instruments were crucial elements which helped musicians to forge and channel their uniqueness.

Third «Souvenir» represents one variation upon this unique sound, which is mostly quiet, tranquil and not organized around the rhythmic structures. It has been partly inspired by the «In A Silent Way», recorded by Miles Davis in 1969. This album is celebrated as one of his best releases, and K. Leander Williams from Time Out New York labeled it as the "proto-ambient masterpiece." Later on, in 2002, this album charted 20th position in the list of «25 Most Influential Ambient Albums of All Times».

Compilation of the mix required digging into the culture of southern Soviet republics and watching post-perestroika noir flicks, which were soundtracked with gems of Soviet jazz. In fact, the mix "weaves" together with an assertion of short excerpts, and only a couple of tracks are played in full. The sound matter is literally pulsating; this pattern governs the whole mix, and only by the end of it the theme reaches the climax.

This mix is a continuation of my research into the jazz music perfectly suited for listening to within a cozy family circle. I'm compiled a diverse selection of recordings, aiming to build up an intimate and warm atmosphere by delivering a powerful, nostalgic sound made of smooth rhythms, bright soundscapes, and driving melodies. It opens with a track by Ukrainian jazz trio Moon Hook and then incorporates both obscure and established artists from Siberia, Uzbekistan and Russia: Alexey Kuznetsov, Igor Nazaruk, West-Siberian Jazz Quartet, and Sato. The mix culminates with a track by one of the most famous Soviet jazz collectives, the Variety Orchestra directed by Oleg Lundstrem.
