A four track album, DayZi Suite

Inspired from the modular synthesiser works of Sarah Belle Reid and Walker Farrell and hardware sequencing of the Soma Ornament from Vlad Kreimer; my own digital modular synthesiser, the DayZi; plus the eight track recorder of DayZi to capture the Soma Enner and Soma COSMOS magic.

This is a suite of four separate recordings of live improvisations using my digital modular synthesiser, the DayZi (Release 05), which I programmed in Max (Cycling 74). The synthesiser at it's core is a generative music performance instrument using linked timers to trigger other timers and the FM oscillators, some parts are planned ahead of the performance, others are conjured up during the performance. Key parameters liker timers, initiators (bangs, pings etc.) and frequencies are controlled through a patch bay, that can be altered during the performance. Not all synthesiser parameters are hard wired into the generative process, leaving room for the performer (me) to improvise twiddling the parameters live during the recording. All parameters can be saved to preset banks ready to recall later or saved/read from a text file. No midi interface was used for this performance, nor was this included in Rel 05 of DayZi, future releases will consider addition of midi for launching and parameter control via rotary encoders.

Some times the DayZi synthesiser provided the inspiration for the Soma Enner playing, other times vis versa.

No digital audio workstation (DAW) was used. Only minor editing of the recorded wave files using Audacity, to trim off the silent portions at the beginning and end was employed.

Development of the DayZi began on the 3-Sep-2025 as a proof of concept, happy with the initial prototype, I continued further, now at Release 05 on the 10-Sep-2025.

The tuning is largely just intonation (JI) based on the DayZi side, whereas on the Soma Enner is freely improvised tuning based upon the emotional drive created by the DayZi recordings and that of the performer, the crucial human element. There was no specific plan of a tuning scheme, largely at the whim of my imagination at the time of inception.

The suite is based on four performances, all related by the instruments used to play them and similar theme, though the timbral sounds produced very much changed from one performance to the next, but yet enough in common to function as a suite.

The first piece in the suite, DayZi Switch On (4:10), is turning on the sound machine. Typical tuning was 100,150, 300, 600, 700, 324 Hz.

The second piece in the suite, DayZi Explore (1:59), is rummaging around exploring the scene. The tuning here is rather bizarre, purely improvised tuning and experimenting with recursive generative tuning.

The third piece in the suite, DayZi Alarm (1:03), the exploration has triggered an alarm -- oops.

The fourth and final piece in the suite, DayZi Cycle (7:38), the alarms give way to an exploration of two linked sequences, each a daisy chain of events in their own right but with a common trigger in time. The Enner performance interprets the daisy chain of events. The starting point for the tuning, for the first daisy chain was: 
100 Hz, 200 Hz, 100*(2/3) Hz (#1), 100*(4/3) Hz;
whereas for the second daisy chain: 400 Hz, 400*4/3 Hz, 400*3/2 Hz,  100*(2/3) Hz (#1).

The common node of the two chains is marked as (#1).
