Margaret Munkuli talks about the successes and challenges the women of Nchibondo village have been facing with their local Baobab Maheo production. The women are required to build a structure for their Maheo production; but a stand for a workshop is expansive. Capital is needed. “We need a sponsor for our project…!”

Since April 2016, Zubo Trust joint forces with radio continental drift to train Zubo staff and six community based facilitators (CBFs) in audio recordings and production. Each of the women CBFs is leading a local Women’s Forum of 25 members. The women documented the work of the organisation on village level and in the Women’s Forums. They also interviewed their elders, mothers and grandmothers, on BaTonga culture, tradition and history.

She wanted to learn about the work and projects which NGOs in Binga are doing; understand where and how she herself might get involved… listen to her experience..!!

An ongoing workshop of Zubo craft weavers in Chinonge ward. Notani Munkuli, one of Zubo's best craft weavers from Siachilaba ward is training other weavers on quality crafts production of baskets. It starts by preparing the Ilala palm leaves correctly and to the right size corresponding to the size of basket one seeks to weave....

Due to her volunteering work with Zubo Trust and at a Binga orphanage, Bulemu was chosen to participate in an exchange programme and go to Germany in January 2019. listen to Bulemu as she speaks up for the amazing work of Zubo women in fending for themselves and their families in women coops like fishing and the production of natural soap from Jatropha oil extracts.

Bulemu Matale - i am going there as "Zubo"...!

Zubo's Matron Muleya went across Lake Kariba to support a fund-raising concert for Zongwe FM in Sinazongwe Zambia. She represented Zubo Trust in the event and introduced the women's projects and productions like natural soap from Jatropha oil extracts. We made this chance-recording with Muchindu Pumba towards the end of the fundraising concert for Zongwe FM. You’ll hear event and music still on-going in the background. Pumba had a long conversation with Matron, felt inspired about the Zubo project and lent her sisters across the waters in Zimbabwe this full-hearted support. Hear a remix with Zubo’s Angeline, production manager of the Jatropha soap.

Pumba sings the praises of Binga Soap

Zubo Trusts‘s Donor Ncube sheds some light on what it really is that makes an ilala basket a “quality product”. We are talking about is the kind of knowledge that is passed on for generations from mothers to daughters. Yet each generation may also be adding new experiences, slightly different practices of “the same” and their own very peculiar perspective on the traditional Tonga craft…! 
Zubo Trust as an organisation assists rural weavers groups in Binga District in marketing their products; Zubo distributes and collects orders and ensures for information flow and capacity building across interested weavers groups in the six wards that Zubo is operating in.
Donor herself grew up in Simatelele Ward and learnt weaving ilala crafts from her mother. As she tells us in the archived interview, the earnings from crafts sale allowed her widowed mother to send Donor to secondary school; thus the young girl was eager learning the arts of weaving herself and stand on her own feet. Donor Ncube on the secrets of Tonga basket weaving

Bbindawuko Banakazi Fishing Cooperative Ltd. is a project initiated by Zubo Trust, a women empowerments organisation in Binga. The BB- Coop are the first women to regain fishing rights on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. The coop counts 10 female members and two male employees and was legally registered for kapenta fishing in 2011. In this recording from 2018, Zubo board chair, Danisa Mudiumba talks about this flagship project by Zubo Trust that marks the foundation and early history of the rural women economic empowerment organisation. ZUBO Trust brings Women together for self-empowerment. Zubo is a Women’s Organization based in Binga working among the rural women of the Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe since 2009. Zubo has become widely recognized for its successful work empowering the rural women in income-generating projects, which utilize the natural resources of the remote area such as Fish, Kapenta, Ilala, Baobab or Moringa. In 2012 Zubo made national headlines by launching the first Women Fishery Project on the Kariba Lake.
