These clips from a currently on-going audio journal of conversations in Zambia and Zimbabwe are broadcast here as a preview for forthcoming playlists and full-length recordings to be shared on archive.org as the journey on the ground continues. The above title cites a track and poem by Blackheat in Harare featured here to open the preview and the listening wires to, in and across the region. Beyond making African cultural history and knowledge available to on-line listeners, the interviews with artist, activists and producers form a research for creative media projects and training for women in the area aiming to foster and multiply local media production.

Zubo Trusts‘s Donor Ncube sheds some light on what it really is that makes an ilala basket a “quality product”. We are talking about is the kind of knowledge that is passed on for generations from mothers to daughters. Yet each generation may also be adding new experiences, slightly different practices of “the same” and their own very peculiar perspective on the traditional Tonga craft…! 
Zubo Trust as an organisation assists rural weavers groups in Binga District in marketing their products; Zubo distributes and collects orders and ensures for information flow and capacity building across interested weavers groups in the six wards that Zubo is operating in.
Donor herself grew up in Simatelele Ward and learnt weaving ilala crafts from her mother. As she tells us in the archived interview, the earnings from crafts sale allowed her widowed mother to send Donor to secondary school; thus the young girl was eager learning the arts of weaving herself and stand on her own feet. This playlist of Voices from Binga forms part of “The Women Sing at Both sides of the Zambezi”, an archive of life-story-telling established by African women for their sisters, and brothers, near and far. The archive currently contains more than 70 interviews with women in Arts, Culture and Media from Zambia and Zimbabwe. It forms a start for audio-visual–radio and creative media projects with women in the Zambezi region aiming to pass the skills of digital productions and the tools of their distribution in to the hands of the storytellers. 
The online publication of the recordings is in process. Each week more links to on-line audio will become available for global listeners to play and download the recordings under creative commons license. The collections from Binga, Bulawayo, Harare, Kitwe, Livingstone, Lusaka, Masvingo, Mazabuka and Monze are a beginning. The archive is open … and the Zambezi is a long stream…

Basilwizi Trust is a cultural advocacy organization for the communities of the Zambezi valley, the Tonga people who were displaced from their ancestry homeland during the construction of the Kariba Dam in the 1950s.

THE PEOPLE OF THE GREAT RIVER
The Tonga people who inhabit the areas in the Zambezi Valley on Zimbabweʼs northern border, are descended from those who were forcibly removed from their homes and fields in the valley in 1957 to make way for the rising waters of the mighty Zambezi River after the filling of Kariba Dam. The dam brought hydro-electric power and wealth to the country, but passed over those who were displaced, leaving them in the dark ages of exclusion for some decades after. Having lost everything their culture survived strongly as a driving force of self-assertion, resilience and development.

ZUBO Trust brings Women together for self-empowerment. Zubo is a Women’s Organization based in Binga working among the rural women of the Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe since 2009. Zubo has become widely recognized for its successful work empowering the rural women in income-generating projects, which utilize the natural resources of the remote area such as Fish, Kapenta, Ilala, Baobab or Moringa. In 2012 Zubo made national headlines by launching the first Women Fishery Project on the Kariba Lake.
