Radio Benska is a show focused on Eastern Europe and the US Midwest. It operates at the peripheries of cultural power, celebrating artists who survive their environments. This month’s mix is a very special selection by DJ, writer, organizer, and all around powerhouse Opal Opal. In zir own words:

“manele is the roma/traveler romanian pop music that has been ostracized for years for being ''low culture''/''bad taste'' despite the genre's obvious popularity and milions of viewson youtube.

just like bulgarian chalga (another specifically roma genre), it embodies everything that's ''wrong'' with these eastbloc countries that want to show their ''westerness'' namely strong turkish/arabic influences, as well as lyrical themes centering making money, street smarts, heartfelt love stories and bragging about wealth and vanquishing your enemies/flexing on the 
haters.

manele is arguably the most interesting musical product to emerge in post-communist romania, a truly unique and local genre, still dismissed and overlooked by critics, westerners lumping in under the ''turbofolk'' umbrella and most locals not even considering it ''music'' at all.

recently, both manele and chalga have been reclaimed by local queer communities, although they are still banned from ''serious'' clubs and festivals. also, almost all the people djing manele music are white and often bourgeois.

in romania, the three golden age manele greats (early - mid 00s before the embargo from public tv and radio late 00s) are florin salam aka the king of manele, adrian copilul minune (the wunderkind) and nicolae guta. while salam and adrian are the considered the best voices in manele, guta has
clawed his way to the top with extremely fun, savvy lyrics, enormously catchy tunes and an overall jokester persona.

his best tracks are about making money, whether he's stacking millions, buying planes while others are buying cars or comparing his haters to a bunch of mice that he'll set the cat on. he also often collaborates with white rappers play aj aka susanu and mister juve as well as a host of other lesser
known singers.

this mix is a showcase of absolute party hits, flexin classics and some real oddballs.

From the uncharted Future Nuggets library comes a non-focused development of sounds and grooves: Goldish - selected tracks occurred along the years in the testing facilities of N-am Studios (FN), featuring mainly Horațiu Ș (Plevna) and Ion D. But also our dear friend and colllaborator Eugen "Piti" Imecz (Steaua de Mare), and the fantastic Derya Ildirim, with whom we had the most fortunate chance to meet and jam in our Bucharest studio a while back.
