I finally come to the end of this long emotional Journey paying tribute to one of my all-time favorite artists. This was the type of tribute I was hoping I would not have to do for a very long time but as they say, all good things must come to an end, for Roy Ayers, fortunately, his music will live on forever. This man has left us a legacy that will never be duplicated.  I want to personally thank Roy Ayers for being part of my whole life when it came to music, he is the reason why I listen to music the way I do and I truly thank him.  This was finished on 04/27/2025

The beloved DJ unpacks his most influential records in our flagship live series, Playing Favourites, recorded at Dekmantel in August.

Palms Trax, the beloved British DJ and producer considered a "veteran" of the scene at only 33 years old, hit it big with a career breakout back in 2015. Since then, he's become known for his long-running radio show and record label, Cooking With Palms Trax, where he releases new music, reissues and more. His style is soulful, gravitating towards low-BPM house, disco, zouk and everything in between.

Recorded at Dekmantel in August, this RA Exchange is the latest edition of our flagship live series, Playing Favourites, where we invite artists to curate and dissect some of the records that shaped their approach to music. Palms Trax speaks to RA editor Gabriel Szatan about the song that acted as a gateway to his musical education; the track that turned him onto the idea of making music; and the band that he considers to be the "coolest of all time," as well as forthcoming music on his own label.

What unites these releases, Palms Trax says, is a powerful, ageless and immediately accessible sensibility. They aren't about technical mastery but about feeling. During every conversation among collectors and music lovers, we often throw names of artists and bands, their releases (rare or not), collaborations, their impact on the music, who sampled them, etc. … When the name Roy Ayers comes up, everybody pauses because he is the jazz-funk royalty that always requires special attention. He was on a league of his own. Incomparable to anybody else. Unfortunately, we lost him few days ago. Another legend has passed on the torch and is going to music heaven.
Like to many others, he is a huge reason why I love funk and jazz-funk. I started listening to him in the E80s with his boogie-funk period…and then I went back in time collecting every piece of records he has released as solo artist, with his band Ubiquity or as collaborators and producer on many albums from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s… I am glad that I saw him live in 2005…amazing concert.  
His legacy will continue…his music will continue to be played, sampled, and to serve as inspiration for generations to come.  RIP Mr. Ayers…you will be missed...forever!

Celebrating the 75th birthday of Mr Roy Ayers with this mix, showcasing some of my favourite tracks from his slightly lesser known material… Well, I mean compared to tracks like Everybody 
Loves The Sunshine, Searching, We Live In Brooklyn, Running Away, Love Will Bring Us Back Together…

I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

Roy Ayers 75th Birthday Mix

I remember the 1st time I heard of Lonnie Liston Smith; it was through the album credits of Jay-Z’s “Reasonable Doubt”. I’ve always been more intrigued with production rather than lyrics but still, I didn’t really catch on to his work until later on when I saw a video of Ski Beatz where he was explaining how he made “Dead Presidents“. That’s when I realized I had to dig deeper into LLS’ catalogue, especially as a young beat producer at the time.

Even since then, Lonnie Liston Smith has captured & mystified my ears with his music. Whether on the solo tip or with his Cosmic Echoes, LLS’ compositions are filled with funky rhythms, peaceful messages, celestial rhodes solos and timeless rhythms. He was, and still is a true visionary, and I’ll always feel like he was way ahead of his time.

For this mix, I selected some of my ultimate cuts, tracks that helped me escape from reality, travel to outer realms & meditate on my past/current/future endeavours.
