The first instalment of the Forbidden Dance Label is an organic brew of musicianship supervised by one of the Chicago deep house scene pillars - Vick Lavender. 

Three warm cuts are tinted with a jam feel showing Lavender's 
well known ability to gather different kind of music players and vocalist resulting in a soulful sections that are cleverly breaking the usual and linear electronic music mould. 

That's pretty obvious on "Habano", the opener track which fluently combines multi-layers of piano and synth sections in contrast to tribal rhythmics and flowy marimba background. With Yvette Magallon pouring pure honey with vocal inserts it's a never-stopping dance of the soul elements. 

Lavender manages to keep the same feel on the B side as well with "The Definition" track going off a bit more subtle but at the same time showing a funky edge with a playful bassline. Reverbed percussive lushness and diverse synth teasers are tinting the track with a summer night breeze, something your hips would move to. 

"The NiteFlyte (Jessie's Journey)" is a closing track and a slow-burner riddled  with spacey explorations of the keyboard. It gives almost 80's like feel beautiful integrating subtle synth envelopes and even
marimba bits. A perfect deep rounder of this musically rich release. Hats off mr. Lavender!

Deeper Sounds are compiled of music produced before and during the current global pandemic. This selection features a singular vibration harken to the days of when I entered club culture. The contrast of yesterday and today shows a throughline that is consistent with what deeper music means to me.

This body of work serves a universal purpose if you are a DJ there are gems for days that can be applied in many different moods. If you are a listener who simply enjoys the music this particular combination of frequencies will assist in raising your rate of vibration to a level of motivation.

This music has always been medicine for me and for many years and even today as you can here I strive to dive deeper to unlock its secrets. I humbly offer this set in the hopes you will find something in it for you.

Lost Tape: Off The Shelf

"This mix was destined for the shelf in my opinion. As a DJ, I truly enjoy the craft of beat mixing and building moods through a mix that is more than the sum of its parts. When you strive for that and hit some unexpected high points but then miss something really simple along the way it is so frustrating. Sure, you can do re-takes or even edit the whole set after the fact, but that would mean admitting defeat on some level. I’ve re-used parts of this mix in other sets, so to put it on the shelf didn’t burden me in the slightest at first. Listening to it again some two years later, I can hear it with somewhat fresh ears and be more accepting of my few sloppy mistakes. It dawns on me that much of the music I enjoy has imperfections that adds a lot to the experience. This is the music I play, and I encourage everyone else working as a creative to take a second look at their shelf."

Lost Tape: Off The Shelf

tribute to a pioneering figure in the RnB, soul, disco and funk music…that helped shape up the careers of many top acts.

His name is Mr. Cecil Holmes.
Born and raised in New York City… Started singing doo-wop in ‘52 for the bands, Cavaliers, Fi-Tones and Solitaires.
In the E60s, Cecil left performing and joined the business side of the recording industry. Barely in his 20s, he co-founded RMH Productions.
His personality was a natural fit for promotion and sales which proved to be right..
Throughout the 60’s he worked for Columbia and later as a Regional Manager for Mercury Records… promoting the artists Clyde McPhatter, Bobby Byrd, Dee Dee Warwick, and Mack Rice.
His next stop was Cameo-Parkway Records where he began a friendship with Neil Bogart.

In 1967 they moved to Buddah Records….whe he as a VP signed the Impressions, Edwin Hawkins Singers, the Five Stairsteps and Gladys Knight & the Pips.
Thru Buddah records, he also distributed Curtom, T-Neck, Hot Wax, and Sussex Records which had many big names in the black music genre.
While at Buddah Records, he produced 2 albums under the name "The Cecil Holmes Soulful Sounds," in 1973.

The following year, Cecil relocated to LA to join Neil Bogart for his next venture, Casablanca Records. As one of the original founding partners, Cecil helped launch the label with albums by KISS and Parliament. He also worked closely with the Pips, the Sylvers, Hugh Masekela and he helped Donna Summer, Village People and other disco artists to worldwide success.

While working as VP od Casablnca, in 1975, Cecil premiered his own custom label...Chocolate City... named after Parliament's album "Chocolate City".

At Chocolate City he had biggest success with the band Cameo…and he also signed Brenda & the Tabulations, Vernon Burch, Randy Brown, Starpoint, 7th Wonder and Kevin Moore (later known as Keb’ Mo).

In 1980, Neil Bogart and Cecil Holmes sold Casablanca records to PolyGram.

After that, Cecil joined CBS Records as VP for both Columbia and Epic Records. He worked with top acts like Earth, Wind & Fire, Mtume, and Luther Vandross.

A few years later, Cecil and Larkin Arnold signed New Kids on the Block to Columbia Records…which brought him the biggest worldwide success.
