In this episode, we will continue our journey researching how synthesizers, drum machines, and the cassette format revolutionized music on the western coast of the Mediterranean. 

This time, we will focus on how it affected Raï. The introduction of synthesizers replaced accordions and trumpets, and drum machines displaced drums and percussion. This new soundscape constituted the space of experimentation for great producers such as Rachid Baba Ahmed and Boualem Disco Maghreb, who produced the great stars of the time on their respective record labels.

It was during this time that Raï became popular internationally, traveling to Morocco, France and beyond, and hundreds of cassette shops were open from Wahran to Barbès.

The mid-90s brought turbulence to the world of Raï in Algeria, as the genre faced persecution and censorship.

We will try to give a glimpse of all these different faces of Raï with a 100% cassette episode dedicated to the golden age of the Chabas and Chebs.

Sentiment ou émotion qui peut-être banale pour certain.e.s, l'expression de la colère nous permet pourtant de manifester une sensibilité face aux événements se déroulant autour de nous. La sélection passe par des classiques de musique de pays du levant, rap palestinien, rap algérien, musique indie égyptienne, etc.

Following the path we began in the last radioflouka episode of how Western Mediterranean genres became popular internationally, we will explore with Cheb Mimo the journey of Raï around the world.

In the late 1980s, vinyl editions of albums produced in Algeria appeared in the UK, France and Germany. Famous compilations such as "Raï Rebels", "Raï, the album" or "Le Disque D'Or Du Raï" sold thousands of copies while Chabba Fadela and Cheb Sahraoui toured the United States. At the same time, artists such as Cheb Kader, Chabba Zahouania and Charef Zerouki were recording and releasing on important European labels.

To carry out this sonic exploration, I immediately thought of Cheb Mimo, who is working hard to spread this story globally.
We share the decks for a selection of one hour of the best Raï on vinyl released on European labels.

C’est aussi l’opportunité d’écouter une brève histoire et définition du shaabi originel égyptien remontant aux années 70 tout en découvrant des morceaux passant d’un Shaaban Abdel Rahim à la productrice El Kontessa.

Pour cet épisode j'ai voulu rendre Hommage à la musique Égyptienne à travers des extrait des musiques de film des parodies musicales d'époque et bien entendus des classiques intemporelles.
J’ai vraiment pris plaisir à réaliser cette sélection car elle m’ a rappelé beaucoup de moment de mon enfance quand je regardais la télé ou des VHS durant mes vacances au maroc dans les années 90, et c’est sans plus attendre que je vais vous partager cette sélection. Bonne écoute !

This episode is dedicated to our musical foremothers whose voices led us to the liberation of self and society. The anthology of slutty Arab music explores the eros of Middle Eastern and North African pop music. Central to this movement are a generation of female singers, the likes of Haifah Wehbe, Ruby, and Nancy Ajram, who destabilized an entire region with the force of their sensuality alone.These women wholly embody their carnal selves, unabashedly evoking passion and appetite; they transformed before us, through TV screens, CD players and in internet cafes, to emblems of a cultural revolution. 

As pop icons, these women arouse within us a primordial connection; their music an instrument of revolution against puritanical paradigms. The threat of their artistry compelled their societies to confront their paradoxes and in doing so, exposed the fragility of their value systems, and redefined the meaning of Arab womanhood. They exist at a unique nexus of hateful vitriol and unconditional adoration; it is this very contradiction that underscores their revolutionary prowess. They embody nuance and its liberative capabilities within a context of legislative, religious, and domestic binaries. The depth and impact of their work has historically been dismissed as mere sensationalism, but this episode directly deconstructs that idea. 

I have enlisted my dear friends Darine (@stilld.a.r) and Nadine (@goodkidnaadcity), also known as the Tahan Twins, to curate a playlist that offers us a sonic exploration of female Arab inhibition. In fact, my friendship with the twins is a direct result of the solidarities made possible by these women! An entire ecosystem of intimacy and community was born from their labour. We wish to invite you to experience this community of sex and sensuality with us!
