'El Commodino' is a new section of my monthly show where I'll be inviting artists to play sounds they don't get the to showcase on the regular. That could be tracks on the fringes of their rekordbox, music they listen to privately, tunes that mean something to them, or just an hour of ambient music, or even death metal, or all of the above. Literally whatever feels close to their heart in time of recording. 

El Commodino's first guest is Azemad, the Berlin-based Egyptian producer behind my favorite EP of 2022 'Afriki' (released on Awkwardly Social).  For the hour, Azemad blends vintage and contemporary experimental sounds, featuring a selection of influential tracks dating back to the mid-1970s. The compilation showcases a blend of diverse analog sounds and intricate rhythmic patterns.

The 3rd session of El Commodino is by A7ba-L-Jelly, a cornerstone of the Cairo underground, one of my personal favorite DJs, and the force behind Jelly Zone– the party that emphasizes the more unconventional and experimental sides of dance music. For this session however, A7ba-L-Jelly took the prompt to heart and is gifting us a collection of early 2000s mainstream rock tunes, no hidden gems, just things she used to listen to during those years.

A main staple of Tokyo’s club scene, @Mars89 is a master of tension building and a prolific producer known for his dystopic sounds and relentless drums. In the 4th session of El Commodino, Mars89 goes full freeform, stirring away from what he usually plays on the dance floor to providing a glimpse of what actively informs and inspires his productions. During the hour he’ll weave through industrial, jazz, musique concrete, drum and bass and many others sounds and textures that he envisions while making music. Sustainable, realistic opportunities for all, and more support for artists to create without compromising on time / money to survive….I think this is creating a narrower pool of people who can pursue artistry…also for nightlife, music, all creative musical pursuits, to be recognised for their true value, with support schemes set up to help people pursue and thrive in these areas…

@poly-chain very much takes electronic much into the future. The Kyiv artist born Sasha Zakrevska uses IDM, electro, and techno as building blocks to construct her own eerie, intense, and atmospheric sound worlds that are as cinematic as they are physical. Her edgy melodies are inventive, and her machine rhythms are hugely distinctive. She has not only written solo albums but has composed for theatre and museums, collaborated with Nene H, and released charity albums for Ukraine as part of her ongoing musical resistance.  

For this week's podcast, Poly Chain has sent us the recording of the very special live show she played at Dekmantel Festival this summer. It is an absorbing hour of beatless sound that will move you as much as any drum track. There are storytelling chapters to the set that takes you from darkened underworlds to starry cosmic expanses as the moods go from reflective and calming to more intense and unsettling. “She is rearranging molecules in the air” was how Shane aka. Kiernan Laveaux‘s mixing style was once described to us by her In Training co-founder, Father of Two. Anyone who has been lucky to catch one of her mesmerising sets over the years across North America, in Berlin, or more recently during a tour in Europe this spring, will know exactly how accurate that description is. Kiernan Laveaux is one of the founding members of In Training, a queer party and collective which made its roots in Cleveland, Ohio in 2014. Over the course of a few years, by throwing their own parties in their small, industralised city In Training became part of the fabric of North America’s queer dance music underground. Shane is now based in Pittsburgh and, alongside In Training, holds strong links to the collectives & event series of Heaven is in You and Motherbeat, as well as other parties and groups based around the globe . One thing you become acutely aware of when listening to Shane play, or to her mixes, is that an intrinsic part of what she does is to create a narrative with the music that she plays.
