this is ¶radio hummingbird’s contribution to this week’s disquiet junto with the serial number 0498. in short, the requirement for this contribution was to use two different imaginary insect sounds produced by other contributors for such prior assignment and cleverly combine/remix them.

i utilised the contributions from ACOUSTIC MIRROR (https://soundcloud.com/acoustic_mirror/cimex-resonare-disquiet0494?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0494) as well as BREANNA JOHNSTON (https://soundcloud.com/breannajohnston/insect-menagerie-disquiet0494?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0494) for this piece and processed them as follows: each track has been recorded onto a cassette loop. one endless tape and one open loop which i crunched up quite a bit on top all this. both loops have been slowed down to different speeds and layered as well as equalised. i further processed both tracks via a delay pedal which was connected to another delay pedal which acted as a modulator. all this has been recorded and received a light mastering in ableton live. nothing else.

On Seine(disquiet0499)

The original sound was the hot water heater and the water level valve discharging in my furnace room. 
I then used Ableton live "Grain Scanner" to generate 9 samples from this ambient sample,
then using (FX) reverb, resonator, rig modulation, delay and pitch shift 
i mix and merged then in to the soundscape ,
 finally all post processing was done in audacity 
(fade in fade out and general normalizing and compression)

Zero Sum Game Disquiet0499

Five minutes of wind and rain; precursor to a storm early on Monday morning. Overlaid is a sonicLAB Thermo, which undergoes various wave folds, EQ modulations, granular reversals and filtration throughout the track.

Blob’s Love Affair and I Mit Echo Ho (und Trio HAI)

In Episode zwei von Echo Ho: nUFO ist eine Symbiose von intelligenten autonomen Musikmaschinen mit ihren Menschen. nUFO emuliert Intelligenz und Eigensinn, vergleichbar einer Katze. Zusammen mit Blob habe ich seine Macher, das HAI Trio (Hannes Hölzl, Alberto de Campo, Isak Han) in ihrem Berliner Studio besucht. Sie erzählen: „Wir betrachten die Katze als unser bevorzugtes Modell für das Gefühl von Handlungsfähigkeit und nicht-trivialer gegenseitiger Un/Abhängigkeit, das wir gerne in unsere Designs von Artificial Agents einbauen, mit denen wir leben und Musik machen. nUFO ist eine Synthese von Iterationen, die in einem Ko-Evolutionsprozess von über 15 Jahren entstanden ist.” Hannes, Alberto und Isak teilen sich ihren Haushalt mit kybernetischen Gefährten. Durch Coding, Patching und Tuning lernen sie sich, wie Haustiere und ihre Wirte, immer besser kennen, schnurren oder knurren auf eine Art und Weise, die in Resonanz geht. Um sich aufeinander einzustellen, werden Ideen zu Gesprächen, das Konzert wird zum Dialog, die Begegnung zur Performance.

Echo Ho moderiert die zwei Folgen des ONpodcast im Juli. Blob, ihr Co-Moderator, eröffnet einen Dialog, um die anthropozentrische Perspektive auf das Zusammenleben aller Arten auf der Erde zu erweitern. Blob ist kein außerirdisches Wesen aus Science-Fiction-B-Filmen, sondern ein beliebter Forschungsgegenstand von Wissenschaftler*innen weltweit, bekannt unter dem Namen „Myxomycota – Slime Mould“, ein Schleimpilz mit Köpfchen. Da Einzeller Verhalten erlernen und an Artgenossen weitergeben können, kommt es zu Begegnungen, deren Potential auch Künstler*innen untersuchen. Verschiedene Modelle der Episteme und Techné werden erforscht und erprobt für die gemeinsam pulsierende Übertragung von Gedanken über das „Techno-Unterbewusstsein“. Im Licht eines kosmisch-technologischen Sinns: Philosophieren durch musikalische Kollaboration.

Blob’s Love Affair and I 

In Episode two: nUFO is a symbiosis of intelligent autonomous music machines with their humans. nUFO emulates intelligence and wilfulness, comparable to a cat. Blob and I visited its builders, the HAI Trio (Hannes Hölzl, Alberto de Campo, Isak Han) in their Berlin Studio. They say: „We consider cats our preferred models for the sense of agency and nontrivial in/ter/dependence we like to build into our designs and choices of Artificial Agents to live and make music with. nUFO is a synthesis of iterations developed in a process of over 15 years of co-evolution”. Hannes, Alberto and Isak share their households with cybernetic companions. By coding, patching and tuning, they get to know each other better and better, like pets and their hosts, purring or growling in ways that resonate. To adapt to each other, ideas become conversations, the concert becomes dialogue, the encounter becomes performance.

Für die letzten beiden Folgen des ONpodcast im Jahr 2021 hat die Künstlerin Isabelle Finou den elektronischen Musiker und Musikphilosophen Rasmus Nordholt-Frieling getroffen. Er erkundet ein spezifisch musikalisches Denken und die mannigfaltigen Möglichkeiten der Modulation innerhalb des Klanglichen, aber auch darüber hinaus: mit Blick auf die Musikalität des Theaters, der bildenden Kunst und der Philosophie. In der ersten Folge lernen wir den Musiker kennen, bevor es im zweiten Teil um seine theoretischen Arbeiten geht.

Rasmus Nordholt-Frieling befasst sich praktisch und theoretisch mit Klängen. Als Klanggestalter, Producer und Konzeptentwickler arbeitet er an eigenen Projekten und kollaboriert mit zahlreichen Künstler*innen aus dem Feld der performativen Künste. Zuletzt erschien seine EP Transmission 20/21. 2021 veröffentlichte Nordholt-Frieling außerdem seine Promotion Musikalische Relationen. Hierin entwickelt er etwa anhand der Gestaltungslehre Paul Klees und der Philosophie von Deleuze und Guattari die Möglichkeiten eines musikalischen, vom Klang inspirierten Denkens.

Die Künstlerin, Performerin und Komponistin Isabelle Finou widmet sich seit 2014 dem Medium Sound. In ihren künstlerischen Konzepten und Experimenten bedient sie sich unterschiedlicher Medien und Techniken. Sie interessiert sich für die Wahrnehmung von Räumen - insbesondere für die klangliche Wirkung von Räumen und Orten, sowie die Wirkung von Klang auf das individuelle Hörgedächtnis. Für die Komposition ihrer Stücke arbeitet sie mit verschiedenen Synthesizern, Field-Recordings von Transit-Orten, insbesondere von Bahnhöfen, Zügen und der dazugehörigen Umgebung sowie stark experimentellem Einsatz von Stimme.

In the last two episodes of the ONpodcast in 2021, the performance artist Isabell Finou has met philosopher Ramus Nordholt-Frieling. He explores a specifically musical thinking and the manifold possibilities of modulation, that musicality makes interesting also for visual artists among others. In the first episode we get to know the musicians, before turning to his theoretical work in episode two.

Rasmus Nordholt-Frieling works with sound theoretically and practically. As sound modulator, producer and conceptual partner he develops own projects and collaborates with numerous artists from the field of performing arts. Most recently, his EP Transmission 20/21 was released. Also in 2021, Nordholt-Frieling published his dissertation Musikalische Relationen. Along the form concepts of Paul Klee and the philosophy of Deleuze-Guattari, he explores the possibilities of a musical, sound inspired thinking.

The performance artist and composer Isabelle Finou dedicates her work towards the medium sound since 2014. In her artistic concepts and experiments she draws on different media and techniques. Especially interesting is the perception of spaces – the acoustic effects as well as the effects on the personal auditory memory. In her compositions she works with different synthesizers, field-recordings and an experimental use of voice.

Annie Bloch (*1994) ist Organistin, Songwriterin und Komponistin in Köln. Sie studierte Musik und englische Literatur in Cork, Irland, dessen Biotop sie künstlerisch sowohl im Songwriting als auch in experimentellen Zugängen zur Orgel und zu Improvisation prägte. In ihrem Bestreben, der Kirchenorgel neue Kontexte zu eröffnen, performt sie solo und in wechselnden Ensembles.

Annie Bloch (*1994) is an organ player, song writer and composer in Cologne. She studied music and English literature in Cork, Ireland – a biotope that continues to shape her songwriting as well as her experimental approaches towards the organ and improvisation. Striving towards opening up new contexts for the church organ, she is performing in varying ensembles.

Resonant Range (disquiet0595)

I saw organist Frédéric Blondy play Éliane Radigue's first work for organ, 'Occam Ocean XXV' at the Union Chapel, Islington in 2018, it was an incredible piece to hear played live. That performance and piece inspired me for an earlier Disquiet Junto (https://soundcloud.com/leonclowes/kept-an-octave-apart-disquiet0564) and this one too (https://soundcloud.com/leonclowes/disquiet0554).

So it was a delight to strip this back even further this week. Playing just the note F I recorded and panned this same note five times using the cinematic preset Still Moment on Logic Pro X, slowly manually adjusting the filter, filter gate, panner and harmonics for 111 bars at a 120 tempo. While it's all about the magic numbers (111) for me, I heard a glitch at just under 30 seconds in when I saved the track as a WAV file and opened it up on Audacity to add in a fade in and fade out (I don't know how to do that yet on Logic... tiny steps self training...)
