“These pages are wrinkled, curled, soaked in the dense thick air for weeks; the lines of ink smudge a little. The words touch. Nights, storms, warm afternoons: all is said in the tale of terrestrial things. Up in a madan tree, a koel repeats its call, incessant, signalling something. A group of women is planting seeds, laying flowers in the water, hands in the soil. The critters confer; living together in a collective river, floating through the stream of extended time, connected like the organs of the same body. Microphone in hand, I am sheltered under a large banana leaf, witnessing the rain that touches all of us inhabitants of this forest. The critters confer; the water circles endlessly.” — Diane Barbé 

After multiple non-human morphings, Diane Barbé comes back to her hominid-self to share a glimpse into Thailand’s rainforests and the acoustic expressions they foster. "a conference of critters" is a humid, drenched, gathering of biophonic and sylvan gestures cadenced by delicate human interventions. Here, the jungle pulses and hums. Thick stridulations guide us from the margins of the forest to its heart. Dwelling between soakings and crepuscular choruses, a multitude of earthlings sound the tropical ecologies. Monkeys, insects, frogs, birds, and humans intertwine under a resonating canopy. ‘The critters confer’ Barbé writes as she inevitably blends with the local fauna. Amid the strident ecoscape, perspectives oscillate — without warning animals (humans included) invade the foreground, momentarily dissolving the sonic tapestry before vanishing back into the greenery. These recollections transport us in a sonant bloom. A murmur rises, creatures stir, rain sizzles, leaves vibrate, the forest materializes. 

All sounds heard and recorded in Nakhon Chai Si province and Khao Sok National Park, Thailand, April-May 2021. Some of the voices and moments were part of Enclosed Garden, an interdisciplinary art residency curated by the Heroines’Wave network.

Waeving together experimental music, biophonic research and activism, Diane Barbé searches for forms of interspecies resonance to explore chronobiology –understanding human and non-human animal entanglements through time manipulations. She is currently creating an ensemble of wind instruments, percussions, bird calls and little sound devices, called The Alien Kin, that are used for musicking in open air, with and beyond human audiences. Diane has been based in Berlin since 2015 and is engaged in many forms of collaborations with dancers, dreamers, whistlers, image-makers, performers, writers, and other kinds of creatures.

PHONOGRAPHY (Vocal Stems)

Cultural producer, curator and lecturer Kamen Nedev [Acoustic Mirror], researches phonography and sound art, with an emphasis on the aural landscape of urban space and the social production of sound.

He produces and presents [self/noise], a radio program dedicated to social phonography and sound practices, sound activism, and militant sound investigation.
He is a member of the ./mediateletipos))) collective.

Part of his work consists of teaching and pedagogy applied to the realm of sound and listening. He has facilitated workshops in institutions such as MUSAC (León, Spain, 2015), Universidad Europea de Madrid (Madrid, Spain, 2015), the Fine Arts Department at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Cuenca, Spain, 2014 and 2015), and the Aula de Música Experimental (Madrid, Spain), where he teaches regular courses.

Hello and welcome to a guided preview of 8 Worlds, Sap As Tears’ first release.
Sap as Tears is best known for their field recording and documentation of undiscovered worlds. For this release, they have been kind enough to make eight of these rare recordings public. To properly understand these worlds, we need to shed old perspectives, molt away expectations, and peer into a portal unknown. Let’s get started.

A peek into a pattering orchestra at a macro scale. An unfiltered capture of a daily commute, the crinkling workday, the monotony of repetition.

Not all worlds are as inviting. We enter the ashmaker’s lair. A place of undoing, twisting, squirming, writhing. An inevitable crime scene. One should not linger here. 

But all is part of a cycle. Life giving water drizzles on the roof of your hollow. Mist curls through the darkness. This is a place for personal contemplation, cautiously sheltered from the unknown.

Let the ritual begin! Guzzle, gargle, absorb. Lick, lap, gulp.
Slurp, suck, quench. Disparate worship searching for harmony.

An off-putting stench wafts through the air. Briny liquid leaves crusted deposits on the land. Scarce nutrients are picked at and squabbled over. It is here that squalid creatures make their home.

Far from the pungent coast, new fangs poke through the frost. A crystalline truth sprouts from within; important and small. The glistening pulse melts downstream, depositing its magic along the way.

We’ve been watched, watching. Another presence sensed us from above and its young need to be fed. The sentinel moves the wind at will, and one’s place on the food chain becomes uncertain. We’ll walk quietly, leaving this place. 

Not everything is meant to be understood. Sketch an interesting form, scribble an important note, but in the dark, you only see the beam you shine. Something has been here before you and most certainly will be here after. All is shifting secrets, swirling senses. Drink deeply and tread lightly, for life is the unfolding of permanent uncertainty.

I went to a local common Northern Raven Corvus corax roost. Unexpectedly, it started raining
and it was also very windy. I was a little undecided whether I should perhaps abort the session,
but then decided to continue recording that rather rough setting.
In the end, I liked the combination of everything much more than a clear recording of these
fascinating birds.
Special guest: Tawny Owl and Greater White-fronted Goose.

La rue Sainte-Catherine est une petite rue de Toulouse située dans le quartier Palais de Justice. Attiré par les travaux de cet espace, j’ai décidé d’y passer quelques mois pour enregistrer et composer avec elle. 
Des sons vibrants, vrillant l’oreille, des gens qui travaillent et des moteurs, des rythmiques lovées à l’intérieur de barrières, tant de matières qui racontent les métamorphoses de nos espaces urbains, en tout cas, celles que je tente d’écouter.

Voies Urbaines est une série de créations sonores autour des rues, impasses, avenues de nos villes et des transformations qui la composent. Titiller l’écoute, la bouger, trouver une manière de raconter avec les sons urbains pour qu’ils soient écoutés, pour qu’ils racontent nos villes et nos rapports avec elle.

Steve Barsotti is a sound artist and educator who lives in Seattle. He has ventured into various approaches to art making including photography, printmaking, performance, invented instruments, improvisation, object recording, location recording, phonography, electro-acoustic-pull-strange-sounds-from-everyday-objects, and there is sure to be more. The common thread has always been a close examination of easily bypassed details; image from angles that you would not normally see, sounds that can only be heard through contact mics and amplification, sonic qualities of materials that are used in everyday life. 

He is a currently a member of the Seattle Phonographers Union, a field recording wielding group of improvisers. The Union is described as " moving beyond habitual experience of sound and uncover what is foreign in the familiar and familiar about the foreign; to explore what we hear and relearn what we know" They have been performing together for five years.
