17. Call sign for 108 FM, Radio de la Resistance. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.  September 2015.  [In September of 2015 there was an attempted coup d’état in Burkina Faso. For two weeks the entire city of Ouagadougou was locked down.  All stores, ministries, offices, banks were closed.  The coup plotters took over the radio and television and shut down a lot of commercial stations.  A few days after the coup, however, a pirate radio station took to the air, ‘La Radio de la Resistance’.  The station was broadcasting using a mobile transmitter calling on all Burkinabé to resist, to fight the plotters.  The station would broadcast communiqués and revolutionary songs and a casio keyboard interpretation of the national anthem.  The signal was horrible but I loved their call sign.

Taxi Music (RIAFC057)

In its most basic form, Thai molam is a rural folk music consisting of a “master singer” and a bamboo mouth organ. Although dismissed by urbanites as low-class, taxi driver music, molam is a raw, soulful, groove-oriented genre with many interesting variations. Thailand’s Psychedelic Country Sounds (RIAFC062)

Laurent Jeanneau (aka Kink Gong) has spent years recording rare and obscure ethnic music from all over southeast Asia. He also collects video compact discs (VCDs), the most widely available format in Asia for everything from kung fu movies to pop music videos. Laurent recently dug into his VCD collection, most found in the markets of small, rural towns throughout the region, and selected some great Khmu and Lao folk music from Laos for your listening pleasure. All of the songs selected for this mix feature the 16-tube bamboo reed or mouth organ (khene). Listen closely and you’ll hear different singing styles and patterns typical of the country’s two major ethnic groups and geographic zones, the Khmu in the north and the Lao in the south. All of the tracks are raw and intimate, recorded on location, and feature the occasional chorus of crickets and other ambient sounds and noises typical of rural Laos. Tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, etc are Khmu, and tracks 2, 4, 6, 8 etc are Lao.

KAREN, LISU, and LAHU - Hilltribe Music from Northern Thailand (Garuda Records, 1992)

The music is raw and unprocessed. The performers are not musicians but rice farmers, survivors of persecution, neglect, and now tourism. Although they are probably the best studied tribal minorities in the world, much of the music of these people has been lost, due to their dislocation, impoverishment, and partial assimilation into Thai culture. The Karen in particular have been praised for many generations by outsiders for their musical talents but today play primarily Western music. 

This cassette offers a sampling of music recorded during a visit to northern Thailand. All of the recordings were made at people’s homes and consequently conversation, children and animals can sometimes be heard in the background. In addition, a few recordings of everyday sounds of village life are included, such as the “Pre-dawn rice hulling” in which the chore of using a wooden tool to pound the day’s rice produces a rhythm for roosters, a pig, and the sounds of the day gradually coming to life. Three instruments are featured: the naw(?), a Lahu gourd mouth organ with five bamboo tubes, which is played by Namise to accompany Nauka in a hillside song under the full moon, and two Lisu instruments: the three stringed toiq, and the jit, a bamboo flute. 

This music is offered as a respectful glimpse into a vanishing way of life graced by simplicity, hard work, and knowledge of making one’s living from the earth.
