About the mix: 

"I feel the best in the 130-140 zone and I hope it shows on the recording. The set starts at 140 and gradually climbs down to around 130, which felt rather counterintuitive at first, but gave me the opportunity to start out with some deeper dubstep and move through different flavours of varying intensities all the way until the end. The only way is not up, at least when it comes to sets on the radio))"

"For as long as I can remember, the Palestinian cause has been at the forefront of my life. I remember being a child and asking my dad about what was going on, on the TV, it was Palestine and Israel. Fast forward to today, it's still the same. It hurts my heart to see what is going on. It hurts my heart to have friends directly impacted. It hurts my heart to have friends defend oppression. It hurts my heart.

This month I decided to put together a mix of music that relates to peace and liberation, from different periods and different locations. I wanted to share music that has impacted me, that has meaning to the Palestinian people and music that bridges the gap between the aforementioned two. Thank you to Adnan Matouq (aka Nane Matok/Al-That) for helping me curate part of this mix.

Ahead of a forthcoming solo record, folklorist, composer and archivist Derek Piotr provides a richly psychedelic TANK Mix, looking for clues in the past 7 decades of electronic experimentation. In a statement ahead of its release, Piotr said: 

“After four years of recording other voices for my fieldwork-archive.com folklorist endeavor, I am overjoyed to say that I am putting the finishing touches on a new solo record: expect fidget house, glitch, and … 13th c. medieval pieces! I hope this mix reflects the sonic world of the album, with plenty of beats and some motets tucked in if you listen carefully…also buckets and buckets of texture.”

This Month's guest is Kelan; a household name in Bristol, Kelan has navigated the industrial underbelly of his hometown performing as part of the theatrical, rhythmic noise act Bad Tracking, the occult driven Salac and running and being a resident DJ of the longstanding club event Slack Alice.

In Japanese folklore predating written text, “Amanojaku” is the name given to a demon-like creature usually who was thought to be able to provoke a person's darkest desires, instigating them into perpetrating wicked deeds. Also described as a “twisted person” or a being with an extremely contrary nature - someone that if ordered something, would do the opposite. As a way of description this may not be an obvious choice when referring Hoshina Anniversary and his latest release, an introspective album titled “Leave Behind”, but as an artist accustomed to doing the opposite of what is expected, we would argue it be a fitting introduction for an artist consistent for the magnitude and variety of musical output beyond the last decade.

Opening track “What Can We Leave Behind In This World (この世界に何を残せるか)” sets the tone for what is to come. Interlacing layers of detuned keys falling endlessly into the void - a muted twist on the work of synth maestro’s AIR.  Like much of the album, a leap of faith. There are elements of deconstruction and awareness throughout. “Essence (本質)” reporting from the front-lines of personal reflection “Self-will is born from a terrible lack. That's what my experience has told me” echoes around drum tones. But there are lo-fidelity flourishes wherever you look, on “Toukai (東海)”, “Asia” “Obsession (Kyouhaku Kannen 強迫観念)”, “Rine (輪廻)” and “Teinen (諦念)”  clank along like the best of 2017 without ever trying to be as mired in coolness. It's a liberating look at Lo-Fi House.

“Landscape (風景)” is a song described by Hoshina as “About death, and when I wrote about death in relation to the landscape, I felt a sense of selflessness”. Quote the lyrics: “I thought I was obsessed with so many things. I feel myself becoming numb. Our own joys and sorrows seem to have nothing to do with the landscape that is spread out here.” Again the theme of leaving one’s history behind to discover the new self.

Inspired by Steely Dan and Weather Report, “Amanojaku (天邪鬼)” is a song described in Hoshina’s own words “created with a rather strange chord progression”. A song he says is about the crisis in social networking, which is no doubt a location where one finds many a “twisted person”. Quote the lyrics: “If you tell me Yes, Then I’ll tell you No. It's a boring communication. Desire for recognition. You are always right. I’m always wrong”. Words spoken by someone who if ordered to do something, would not be unlikely to do the opposite. But what other choice would you make when finding yourself tied into knots by the endless scroll of social activity. Much like a "twisted person". 

Coming back to the theme of Life & Death (opposites or just different sides of the same coin?), and what is beyond, Hoshina has said if he were to die tomorrow he’d be happy he created this collection of songs, so it’s fitting “Leave Behind” ends with “Alone In A”. In a year we lost the great Japanese musical icon Ryuchi Sakamoto, this tune comes as a soothing balm to your humble narrator. It’s a song I could imagine the great man himself nodding along to. It also generated from a place Hoshina could only get to after abandoning almost all of the Japanese instruments and Watechno elements present in his work over the last 5 years. We resonated with this overall feeling ourselves, having changed what we are as a record label/event/concept over the last 5 years. Not often looking back. But like most things in this mortal coil, we must be prepared to leave behind the things we do and are, moving always towards the new. Sometimes in the most opposite of places.

Alex and Francesco met in Bologna in late 2019. Francesco has composed electronic music since 2000 as "tabache" and is a key figure in at least two underground electronic crews/labels Alex is an anglo-naonian singer and multi instru-mentalist. During the lockdown they met secretly to give shape to Lingua Nera the sounds you will hear are the result of sessions and live improvisations built throughout 2020 and 2021 composed mainly with analogue stuff: some synths, a drum machine, loads of guitar fxs and distorsions. The tracks are very diverse but with a common thread that connects them, from weird bluesy chanting (“I don’t want a new guitar”) to psychedelic experimental noisy synths (Parasite). Lyrics from “Poison” and “Warm Up” are written by William Blake.

Naviny Z Fluxu #32 Dissolved (Prague, CZ)

BLEN is an emerging Ghanaian-American selector based in Prague. While an open-format DJ by heart playing anything out of love for the artform, BLEN’s first proper foray into electronic music started with Fatboy’s Slim’s “Slash Dot Dash” at the age of 9 and since then barrelled them into a life-long love for the genre. Within his sets, fun comes first and he hopes to share that with listeners every single second. BLEN also co-runs a weekly house music party series called Disco House Fever in Prague.

@blenblenblen: "I’ve always loved jungle, breakbeat and hardcore. However, I’ve never really had too many opportunities to indulge in that love for 160 and above. Within this mix I decided to seize that; I’ve mixed a lot of jungle, some juke and footwork here and there, and other interesting sounds from old and new (there’s a bonafide Metalheadz classic in there for those who still have their heart pumping for the sound of the 90s). I always like to say “I like to have fun” so I really hope that attitude shows within this 1 hour mix!"
