A sentient chill passes through and awakens a resting body in the cathedral. Faintly heard in its wake are repurposed tape-looped fragments of commercial Halloween kitsch that excavate earliest memories of the season. The sound is eventually lent an atemporal quality by an overlaying of chorused strings, occasional voice, chilly electronic tones, possible magnetic tape EVP. Karl Raymar brings you this personal soundtrack of the season where, as years pass, we more deeply contemplate and celebrate the shift of natural cycles, acknowledge that Death is inevitable but also part of the process in which new things grow; where, with joyful and serious intent, we pay tribute to those we were fortunate to know in the brief window of our lives, an understanding of impermanence to deepen our appreciation of the present moment. Time collapses in the glow of static, leaves redden and decay, souls march through the woods, we light a candle and ring a bell.

My approach to music and sound involves collage, field-recording and a range of ambient compositional approaches that all attempt to convey emotions, symbols and messaging that typically remain hidden from our daily experiences. It is hard to define exactly what I am searching for through music, but my mixes express this very same longing. I made this selection around the time of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s passing, who was a huge inspiration for myself and many others. Bookending the mix with his last recordings, my sentiment conveys that of the first rain of spring and the last light of winter, as profound as every life and its subsequent loss. Rest in peace, Maestro.”
