Seoul-based dj and producer Closet Yi first appeared on our radar in 2020 with her EP ‘Tam Tam Land’, released via Hollick and Gabriel Szatan’s imprint No Bad Days. This quirky EP quickly put her on the map as a producer to keep an eye on. Her next EP on Seoul label Honey Badger Records - incorporating newer styles and less conventional rhythms into her music - cemented her as a multi-faceted and creative artist, meanwhile dj sets across the most respected clubs in Seoul and beyond have proven her as a mainstay of her local scene.Today we’re honoured to have her on our MIXED BY/ series today to answer some of our questions and share with us an hour-long journey of high-energy trance leaning tunes.

While dropping their self-titled debut LP with us in August, Anya and Izaak from Loveshadow (@loveshadowdjs) were kind enough to also record a lovely mix and answer a few questions. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Izaak and Anya, nice to have you on board. Both living in Bay Area, how would you describe your daily surroundings? Is it a nice place to be as an artist?

LS: Right now we live in SF. We grew up one town away from each other near the airport, though we didn’t meet until much later. The landscape is inspiring for sure- we spend as much time as we can out in the parks and wild areas and draw a lot from that. The art and music scenes here run deep, though the cost of living and of course covid have made things tougher.
 
MFM: The songs on your debut album as Loveshadow -which will be out in August- sound incredibly fresh where they also remind to certain pop, boogie, funk and even house from the mid and late '80s. What were some of your main influences for this project? 

LS: Thanks! We have to mention the UK act Fashion after whose song we named the group, but our tastes range all over. You could say that Loveshadow is kind of a lap around the 80’s prehistory of today’s dance music, when things were still firmly rooted in pop songwriting but had a simultaneously psychedelic and funky sensibility- one that grew out of dub/disco/punk counterculture. Getting more serious about learning the records at the roots of the whole thing allowed us to see how we might contribute something new to it in a way that was more than a style exercise.

MFM: Of course also the use of specific instruments ad up to that flavor - it seems that for example the Linndrum plays an important role. Did you aim for that sound and gathered the instruments around it, or the other way around maybe?

LS: We had an overall idea in mind that definitely informed the instrumentation but we’re not purists. A lot of the sounds on the record are replications of or deviations from the iconic originals. Those famous drum sounds in particular are like symbols, they impart a particular meaning and we use them to set a mood.

MFM: What's the dynamic between the two of you like in the studio? Is there a certain steady structure or does this change all the time? Maybe you could tell a little about your writing and recording process?

LS: It changes all the time- we’ve lived and worked in so many places separately and together since we started recording. Either one of us might come up with an idea that we’ll design sounds around, demo, arrange, and then throw it all in the trash and start again. Most of the songs on the record have had a few lives.

MFM: It feels that the music from the LP could work really well live on a stage too. Are there any plans for you to go touring? 

LS: We’re going to play a gig in Detroit later this summer that will be sort of a test run! After that, we’ll see. The project started out as an interest in records and recording, but anything’s possible.

MFM: Thanks a lot for contributing! It seems you quite regularly record a mix. Have you both always been busy collecting and sharing records? 

LS: Our pleasure, thanks so much for asking us! We’re always looking for new music. Sharing mixes online has helped us organize our favorites but playing parties is the best. We were gigging around before covid and we’ll hopefully get back to it as things continue to open up. This mix is definitely on the hype side of things- new digs, old favorites, some edits, tunes pals graciously sent our way, and what we’ve been dancing around our apartment to while we were stuck inside.

Bangers from around the globe. Dar Disku launched with a question: how to channel heritage into dance floor elation? Well, when your name translates to 'home of the disco,' the brief feels pretty self-explanatory.

In the first few years, that meant crafting edits of Khaliji hi-NRG and Bollywood soundtracks to fit contemporary 'crates. They took off as DJs through a run of radio and parties in the UK—where they currently reside—flexing deep finds from across the SWANA region. Their vibrant debut album, out in September on Soundway, furthers the mission.

True to form, their RA Podcast is stuffed with heaters from all over the map: Algeria, India, Chile, Jordan, Australia, Turkey, Libya and Morocco get a look-in, as well as a few staple acts that betray the kind of high-wattage European festivals the duo increasingly frequent. It's not hard to see why—this mix is 90 minutes of sunshine.

I realized last weekend that I had not done a mix since early 2017 and it was about time to bring the series back. So here is Habibi Funk Mix 008 with a selection of vinyl and tapes which were originally released in the 1970s, 1980s, and even as late as late 1990s. We got a couple of previews for material we have licensed and that will drop in the future from artists such as the Golden Hands, Attarazat Addahabia, The Scorpions and Majid Soula. Apart from the that I’m super happy to have Libya covered with 3 tracks, a country about whose musical heritage I didn’t know much outside Ahmed Fakroun obviously. From the obscure to the more known....

Freedom of Groovement is on a mission to share the best and most significant music from around the world. For their residency on Radio TNP, they're hearing from the DJs and artists themselves, allowing them to take us on a journey through their musical roots. For their first episode, they spoke to Ethiopian band Admas, whose 1984 LP "Sons of Ethiopia" was recorded in Washington DC and recently reissued in New York's @frederiksbergrecords. Their influences are as diverse as the album itself, but mainly rooted in the jazz of Grover Washington, Weather Report and Azymuth, plus a surprising shoutout to country legends Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton. Where In The World Is: Admas w/ Freedom of Groovement

Where In the World aims to give a voice to artists from all over the globe to share their musical roots. The next installment comes from @gabrielbadwan based in Curitiba, Brazil. Though eccentric to the musical centers of São Paulo and Rio, Curitiba of late boasts a small but vibrant scene. As the head of @hmtwtrilhasonora there, Gabriel is in the envious position to dig for Brazilian gems at local second hand shops or ‘sebos’. The show is focused on some of these finds, jazz and boom-bap street soul from the 80s onwards. The way Gabriel put these tracks together loosely tells the story of his country, and what makes Brazil so special to him, despite all the darkness there at the moment. At a time when words can sometimes fail you, Gabriel lets the music do the talking.

Where In the World's global journey through artists' musical roots continues with DJ and producer Moving Still (@movingstill). As a producer his dancefloor rocking hits have circled around the world in the hands of your favorite DJs, and include releases on Nail Shop Records, Orange Tree Edits, Dar Disku Records and most recently Jive Hive. Though he's best known for his danceable edits of forgotten Arabic hits dug out from dusty cassettes, Moving Still's influences extend beyond the Gulf and include 90s dance, his own start as a hip hop DJ and the ambient music of Aphex Twin. As a DJ, he's a resident on Dublin Digital Radio where he and his guests showcase (in his own words) 'ouddy bangers' and on Palestine's Radio Al Hara where he takes a more relaxed approach. In this show, Moving Still takes us through his early days DJing hip hop and opening for MF DOOM, how sampling Arabic sounds helped him affirm his own cultural identity and how ambient music helped him complete his PhD in immunology. The tracklist for this episode is all Killer no Filler, and includes a couple exclusive as yet unreleased tracks from Moving Still, one which is out on Jive Hive next month and one ambient track that will probably never see a full release.
