What Tickles Your Peach?

All Women's Voices (AWV) is a Radio Western tradition that remembers the lives of the women lost in the brutal Montreal Massacre at École Polytechnique. Each year, the station dedicates 24 hours of programming to honour this day, which takes place on December 6th, the anniversary of the tragedy.

As somber as the day makes us, another part of AWV's vision is to celebrate the remarkable work that women do, day in and day out. Despite many truthful narratives that place women as always working against a strong current, AWV also wants to empower through giving credit where credit is due - to the innate beauty and talent that women uniquely possess.

This year we are focusing on the unsung stories, behind the scenes work, creative endeavours, and the deeper wellness of women. Particularly, we will focus on women's creative work and those who are marginalized in even more ways than just gender--being a woman of colour, an immigrant, a single mom, survivor of various forms of abuse, etc.

AWV - Meditations on Motherhood

For 25 years, DJ MelBoogie has been deeply embedded in radio, both as a host, and mixshow format DJ. Her accolades really speak for herself. Like any real hip hop head, she has love for community building, and a track record for lifting young artists along with her. Radio Western sat down with the iconic DJ to talk about this, as well as the state of women in hip hop, and how she’s held her own to become one of Canada's top hip hop DJs on and off the air.

 

Hailing from Toronto, DJ MelBoogie is one of the country’s best-known female DJs. MelBoogie has been the resident DJ for Honey Jam, Canada’s longest-running all female showcase (www.honeyjam.com), since it launched in 1995, and is Canada’s first female CORE DJ.

In 2008, Mel won the Stylus Female DJ of the Year Award, naming her the top female DJ in Canada, and was the only DJ selected to participate in Luminato’s Mille Femmes Exhibit, dedicated to Toronto’s most inspiring women in the creative arts, presented by L’Oreal. She’s also opened for some of the most respected performers in the world of entertainment, including Kevin Hart, Major Lazer, Lauryn Hill, and more. 

DJ MelBoogie continues to show her dedication to upcoming artists on her weekly radio show, Studio B Radio, heard live on VIBE105 (www.VIBE105TO.com), every Tuesday 8-10PM. 2018 marks her 25th year as a DJ and host on Canadian radio.

AWV - An Interview with DJ MelBoogie

Dr. Charmaine Nelson is a Professor of Art History at McGill University. She has made ground-breaking contributions to the fields of the Visual Culture of Slavery, Race and Representation, and Black Canadian Studies. Radio Western spoke with her about her experiences as a Woman of Colour in academia, and the place of women in her work.

 

About Dr. Nelson: To date, Dr. Nelson has published 7 books, 21 book chapters, 8 journal articles, and other publications. Furthermore, she has given over 200 lectures, papers, and talks across Canada, USA, Mexico, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Central America, and the Caribbean. Her most recent book, Towards an African Canadian Art History: Art, Memory, and Resistance (2018), is the first to consolidate the field of African Canadian Art History. Nelson is also actively engaged with the media including CBC, BBC One, and PBS. She blogs for the Huffington Post Canada and writes for The Walrus, and most recently, she was the William Lyon Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University (2017-2018).

Yaya's Kitchen is not a restaurant. It is a curated culinary space that features the foods of the African Sahel region and is inspired by the global Black Culinary experience. Yaya's Kitchen is owned and operated by husband and wife duo, Maryam Wright and Malvin Wright in London Ontario’s Old East Village and is located (housed) at the London Food Incubator. Yaya’s Kitchen is a Social Enterprise that seeks to create a space to tell the story of the Black Experience through Food. Many people in London, Ontario do not know that The Old East Village is also the historical home of the London Black Community. The Black Community has been part of the city since the 1800’s and is a part of the community fabric, identity and narrative. South Western Ontario served as a stop on the Historical Underground Railroad that transported enslaved Africans seeking freedom from the United States to Canada for freedom.

 

Maryam and Malvin have a passion for cooking, creativity, community and story telling. Maryam has been cooking since she was a little girl growing up in Northern Nigeria. She is the eldest of 4 and has a degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a Food Handlers certificate from the London Training Institute. Malvin attended George Brown Culinary School before attending University. He has been a Head Chef, Sous Chef and Chef de Partie in fine dining restaurants in Toronto and Peterborough.  Malvin is a Community Development practitioner and has worked in over 5 countries in Africa and Latin America with International Development organizations: Oxfam, UNICEF, CUSO, ACF-International and CIDA. They have 4 Children and spend the majority of their time in their home kitchen cooking, watching movies, and listening to CBC Radio with their kids. They have lived in Jos, Nigeria, Baker Lake, Nunavut and now London, Ontario and have enjoyed the journey every step of the way.

Yaya's Kitchen Special

Richard MacDonagh possesses a diploma in Theatre Acting from Ryerson University, as well as a diploma from the Social Services Worker program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. Richard has 10 years of experience working in social services including: 6 years as a case manager/counsellor for people living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C, 1 year as a case worker for Ontario Works, and is approaching 3 years as the Program Coordinator for the Options Clinic/Anonymous HIV testing program at London InterCommunity Health Centre. Richard has also worked as a facilitator for several groups including people living with HIV as well as LGBTQ youth.

The Freeway Show was started in Accra, Ghana by Jukebox, Danny Warren and DJ Marvin--first broadcasting on XFM 95.1 in March of 2013 with the aim of promoting African Music to the world and also introducing Ghanaian listeners to music and artists from parts of the world that weren’t really getting a lot of attention.

In late 2014, the program began broadcasting on the airwaves of Radio Western with an added focus on Canadian hip-hop and music made locally in London, Ontario. Since then the fan base has grown exponentially and the program has reached fans all over the world and featured music and musicians from over 60 countries. Now hosted by Jukebox and K.Boy Sharpz, the focus has not changed. Our aim is to bring to light the amazing and talented musicians out there that aren’t getting their just due. Beyond what is played through the mainstream media, there is an enormous amount of good music out there and people need a place to be able to access it; that’s The Freeway Show.

Western Treasures - Psychedelic Stoner Rock Podcast

Four neuroscientists from Western University brought out their guitars, microphones, and drum kits to encourage physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adrian Owen, Tim Bussey, Conor Wild, and Hooman Ganjavi have performed in a band called BÄM! for almost 10 years. The band can’t physically play together due to social distancing efforts, so they decided to record a song, albeit virtually, that shares an important message during these trying times: stay at home, so we can save more lives.  

The song is a cover version of the Rolling Stones hit ‘Start Me Up’, and the band reworked the catchy chorus with the lyrics, “stay at home.” Radio Western caught up with bandmates Adrian Owen and Tim Bussey to hear more about how the song came together.

Neuroscientists at Western University sing, #StayAtHome

CAMPUS:

-Western University is calling on the people of London and the area to help document the local history of the coronavirus pandemic as it happens.
-The university  hopes will show future generations what life was like during the COVID-19 lockdown

- Jacqueline Keuper, MSC’17, is pursuing a doctorate in Epi-demi-ology & Biostatistics and Computer Science – the first Western student to study two different fields for one Ph.D.

LOCAL:
- The provincial government of London allowed retail stores to open Monday for curbside pickup, only if there is street access to the store. But in London, there is very little sign of that happening in the first few days.

-Out of a total of 456 COVID-19 cases in London, 299 people have recovered but people have to maintain social distancing and all necessary precautions, say MLHU experts.

-Actor, Ryan Reynolds bought pizza for every graduate from his old school
The actor, who’s proud of the fact he was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, delivered an at-home commencement speech for students graduating from his former high school, Kitsilano Secondary School last Friday. In addition to the speech, he offered to buy pizza for the school’s 385 grads.

SPORTS:

-The NBA will open practice facilities to players on May 8 in cities and states where local governments have eased stay-at-home orders according to their official website. This decision, according to previous reports, does not mean the league is closer to resuming the season.

-The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour plans to resume its schedule in the second week of June, with the first four events, beginning with the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas, on June 11, to be played without fans in attendance.

INTERNATIONAL:

-Musicians in Nigeria are maintaining physical distance as they play outdoor shows for healthcare workers and patients. 
-A 101-year-old woman who survived the Spanish flu just recovered from the coronavirus

WEATHER:

-Expect the maximum temperature to be 11’C and the minimum around 3’C today. It will be a sunny day with a cool breeze in the evening.
