This week on our way to Ozora we’ll be guided by Michael Hodgson, the ‘dark dub-meister’ of PITCH BLACK and MISLED CONVOY who you can catch this summer both at The Dome (as M.C.) and the Dragon Nest (as P.B.).

MISLED CONVOY Excursions into electronica, noise, dub and beyond
In 2015 Dub Mission released Michael Hodgson’s debut studio album as Misled Convoy, ‘Tickling the Dragon’s Tail’. Michael is a prolific music producer who under various band names including Tinnitus, The Projector Mix and Pitch Black.

In 2016 he follows up ‘Tickling the Dragon’s Tail’ with a new release entitled ‘Translations’, a selection of remixes he has created under his artist name Misled Convoy in the last four years.

The acts he has worked with are drawn from a wide geographical and musical net: Feral Five an East London duo, raised by wolves on a diet of punk rock, disco and roots to form biting lyrics and dark pulsing beats, Holotronica which is the solo project of Stuart from Hexstatic, a retro futuristic syneasthetic trip; hailing from Tokyo, Super Cozi, one half of Zen Lemonade known for it’s Psychedelic & Progressive Trance; The Adults, a New Zealand rock supergroup set up by Shihad’s Jon Toogood with the haunting voice of Ladi 6; Flies + Flies, an up and coming London band described as “suffocating, disquieting and claustrophobic – yet, somehow, completely irresistible”; Animat, Down tempo dubby electronica duo from Sheffield; and finally Banco de Gaia, one of the worlds leading exponents of globally inspired eclectic electronica.

As you might then expect, the collection ‘Translations’, traverses a huge variety of genres, from electro house to dub techno, industrial ambience to broken beats all now awash in a sea of dub effects, delay and reverb in Hodgson’s distinctive style.

“I really love taking other peoples melodies and ideas and working them into completely new tracks with my production process. Because there is already a body of work and the idea then, is not in the original concept or origination, but in the how I re-imagine that track into a new work, a new sound, a new state.”

Some of the remixes simply re-present a new way to access and appreciate the original track, sometimes they produce completely different songs completely reimagined. Flies + Flies said the Misled Convoy remix hugely influenced how they play their original track live and Hodgson had the opportunity to hear them play his version back live on stage.
The last track on the album is a new remixed interpretation of his own original work from the album Tickling The Dragon’s Tail.

On our way to Ozora this Saturday afternoon our guide will be GABRIEL LE MAR of Saafi Brothers, who you can catch this summer both at Pumpui and The Dome.

GABRIEL LE MAR is a music producer, living in Frankfurt/Germany, releasing electronic music with a special focus on deep DubTech sounds and Dub inspired TechHouse.His mission remains the same today: exploring electronic music with a dub mindset. With an open mind and always in a search for fresh musical experiences, Gabriel Le Mar likes to integrate himself in different artistic constellations with his dub-inspired TechHouse project Dublocation as well as with the artistic collaboration with Dr. Motte. With his projects Saafi Brothers and Aural Float, Gabriel composed ambient, space and experimental sound scapes.
With Aural Float he worked on audiovisual concepts: as a team they did the artistic supervision of SPACENIGHT, a prototype of a TV-concept, utilizing spectacular film- and documentary footage from outer space with music made on earth. SPACENIGHT became a success on german television and soon reached cult status among the young night watchers until today. On his albums Gabriel produced tracks that are tailored for the dub inspired clubber, combining different playful approaches of Dub with the functionality and stringency of techhouse music. Bridges are built by energetic and minimal grooves. Solo and with his projects Gabriel Le Mar appeared at festivals like Time Warp, Deichbrand, Merkwürdiges Verhalten, Pollerwiesen, Reworks, Roskilde, Sziget, Tribal Gathering, Fusion, Hadra, Ozora…

THE SOUND OF GABRIEL LE MAR On the floor Gabriel is playing a set with live-overdubs that always celebrate the moment in a jam from DeepTechHouse and Techno. His DJ sets are traversed by soulful and minimal nuances. “Live i like using little mixers and other sound control tools in order to do real-time sound changes paying respect to the fact that every live situation has it´s own dynamics concerning the people, the acoustic situation in the room and of course emotional states of the people and me. I like using both: analog media like turntables and cd-players as well as digital equipment that makes it easy for me to bring the sound of my studio to and on the floor. Concerning energy and flow I love going through waves – flowing grooves, sometimes pushing and forcing, and deep soundscapes that make you dance and feel.”
