“ECT can have a beneficial effect and in some cases be life-saving. We are aware that some people experience short-term memory loss and other side effects, but as with any treatment the risks must be balanced against the benefits…

Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT), also known as electroshock, is a well-established, albeit controversial, psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in anesthetized patients for therapeutic effect…

…or alternatively, it is the nom de plume of UK-based producer Leigh Griffiths, a survivor of the 90s London psychedelic party scene.

His early tunes, released on Phantasm and Psychic Deli Records in 1997-98, are now widely considered to be all-time classics of the genre, and indeed have sometimes been cited as an influence by the later generation of trance producers.

Subsequent releases – including the cult favourite ‘Pigmies’ collaborations with Mass (Afro-Celt Soundsystem) – also broke new ground… the whole point of the ECT project being to test all accepted boundaries of psychedelic dance music – rhythmically, sonically, whatever.

(… and to have a bit of a laugh along the way…)

Over the last eighteen years, Leigh has performed live and DJed his satirically warped brand of dirty psychedelia to discerning party crowds all over the world, and – despite being possibly the laziest producer in trance – occasionally manages to drag himself out of the pub for long enough to write fresh tunes.

In his autobiographical book ‘Electroboy’, American writer Andy Behrman describes undergoing ECT as a treatment for bipolar disorder while under house-arrest:

“I wake up thirty minutes later and think I am in a hotel in Acapulco.
My head feels as if I have just downed a frozen margarita too quickly.
My jaws and limbs ache.
But I am elated.”

5 years ago in the swiss alps, an idea was born in the mind of Nico Z3nkai. Determined to spread the music he loved to the furthest reaches of the globe and cultivate a family to share it with ! This idea became reality and has blossomed into what we know today as Digital Shamans Records.
The love and support received worldwide and the collaborations from countless talented artists has made us into what we are today and we are forever grateful. To mark the 5 year anniversary of our journey and to give back to those who believed in and supported us, we present to you a project by our own head honcho, Nico Z3nkai, Insane Totems !

Insane totems is a double sided VA, featuring one of heaviest lineup’s ever seen on a release. It has been a long time in the making, but we are ecstatic to present it to you for your enjoyment.
The release features a diverse lineup, spreading across multiple major labels which have themselves became household names in our community. We hope you can find as much pleasure in the release as we feel everyday for being able to do what we love. This one is for you !

In lockdown times I was cleaning up my archive and found these really killer tracks that never made it into a set before. The first hour contains a lot of great Hitech from the golden years around 2015.  In the end some more diverse tracks including some of the best experimental stuff. 

We played a recording of this @ Adev 20', a DIY streetrave in times of Corona when max groupsize was 4 people. We rented a big portable speaker and walked through the city for 2h before we were stopped by police.
