El trance psicodélico , psytrance o psy es un subgénero de la música trance caracterizado por arreglos de ritmos y melodías en capas creadas por riffs de alto tempo .  Es comparable al estilo hardcore y underground de la música trance.  El género ofrece variedad en términos de estado de ánimo, tempo y estilo. Algunos ejemplos incluyen full on, darkpsy , forest, minimal Zenonesque, hitech psy, progressive , suomi , psy-chill, psycore fusión de trance psicodélico y hardcore psybient fusión de trance psicodélico y ambiente, psybreaks o pistas adaptadas de otros géneros musicales. 

El trance de Goa precedió al psytrance; cuando los medios digitales se volvieron más utilizados, el psytrance evolucionó. Goa continúa desarrollándose junto con los otros géneros.

Para 1992, la escena Goa trance tenía un pulso propio,  aunque el término 'Goa trance' no se convirtió en la caracterización del género hasta alrededor de 1994.  El sonido Goa trance, que a fines de la década de 1990 era siendo usado indistintamente con el término trance psicodélico, retuvo su popularidad en raves y festivales al aire libre,  pero también surgieron clubes nocturnos de psytrance permanentes como Natraj Temple en Munich. Aparecieron nuevos artistas de todo el mundo y fue en este año que comenzaron los primeros festivales de trance de Goa, incluido el Festival Gaia en Francia y el festival VooV en Alemania, que aún está en marcha.

En 1993 se lanzó el primer álbum de trance 100% Goa, Project II Trance , con temas de Man With No Name y Hallucinogen , por nombrar dos. Goa trance disfrutó de su apogeo comercial entre 1996 y 1997 con la atención de los medios y algunos nombres reconocidos en la escena de DJ que se unieron al movimiento. El psytrance está vinculado a otros géneros musicales como el big beat , el electroclash , el grime y el 2-step.

A long-time friend of Meanwhile and regular contributor to GMJ & Matter’s label, Simos Tagias returns once more with the twin-track “Archaios / Geometric”.

With over 400 production credits to his name for some of the finest modern imprints, Simos Tagias has regularly found an outlet for his distinctive brand of progressive house through the likes of Sudbeat Music, Mango Alley and Proton Music. Making a sizeable impression with his debut outing on Meanwhile, the sonic diptych that constituted “Euphoria / Emotion” in March 2021 showcased an immaculate sonic collage that shimmered and glistened with melodic beauty. Remixes from Paul Deep and GMJ & Matter followed in April 2022, while Simos also found himself back on the Meanwhile catalogue with remixes of Imran Khan and Alex O’Rion in late 2021 and early 2022.

Opening his latest original EP, “Archaios” is driven by a powerful rhythmic bedrock that generates club-friendly groove and bassline prowess before shape-shifting pads drift across the mid-range. Subtle motifs gradually enter the fray, exposed fully in the intoxicating breakdown where white-noise risers and open filters provide an epic crescendo. Hitting its straps in the second half, fully evolved melodic sequences jockey for prominence alongside textured chord sequences and driving percussive force. The result is the perfect illustration of modern and emotive progressive house.

A whip-cracking kick and chunky top-line groove anchor “Geometric”, while a pitched synth effect immediately piques interest. Dropping easily into its second movement, bassline and rhythm supply the perfect backdrop for a plucked motif to hypnotise with its delicately evolving character, while a heavily side-chained pad pulsates in cadenced waves and adding to expansive sonic landscape. Pausing for breath at a beatless breakdown, the track effortlessly drops back into its mesmerising combination of revolving motif and heavy rhythm as effects and pads generate an almost transcendental state of bliss as “Geometric” plays out.

With consummate ease, Simos Tagias sculpts a new sonic masterpiece in “Archaios / Geometric”.

INTERVIEW

1. How would you describe your sound?
“It’s obviously been through a lot of changes over the years but it’s always been groove and bassline oriented and I’ve always tried hard to find (and create) cool and original drum and percussion sounds.”

2. Most exciting club moment?
“My first time playing Cream at Amnesia, Ibiza about 15 years ago. A lot of my friends were there and it was just so exciting to be in that dj booth in such a legendary place. An amazing night!”

3. How did you learn producing?
“In 1991 I bought a (Ensoniq 16+) sampler with a built in sequencer and learned to use that, then bought a computer (Commodore Amiga!!) with a sequencer called 'Music X' and a small mackie mixing desk and learned to use that, etc. etc. It was a long, long learning process but I enjoyed every second and I was making records after 6 months - I’m still learning…”

“Maksim Dark - Electrobirds - on Octopus Black.”

5. Dream collab?
“Thom Yorke.”

6. What keeps you going?
“I truly love making music, after all these years I still get excited when I’m in the studio and I’m always inspired to make new stuff.”

“Pro tools.”

8. What do you listen to besides electronic music?
“Besides electronic music I listen to a lot of rock music. From 90’s grunge stuff like Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins to Stone Roses, BRMC, The Cure, The Smiths, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, etc. etc. A lot of soundtracks (especially Thomas Newman, Vangelis and Ennio Morricone) and a lot of ambient stuff like Brian Eno, Steve Roach and Robert Rich. I’m also a big hip hop fan - mainly old school hip hop but also some current stuff like J Cole and Kendrick Lamar.”

9. What is your trademark?
“I use a lot of my own vocals in my tracks - even if it’s just a couple of words with a lot of effects, it gives my sound a personal and unique touch.”

10. What makes you laugh?
“Peep Show, Reeves and Mortimer, the Mighty Boosh, Brass Eye, Blackadder, Bill Maher, Russell Brand, Will Ferrell…”

Ziger’s Eat My Hat imprint returns welcoming Kenan Savrun to the label for his debut single. Hailing from Ankara, the Turkish artist has a long history as a DJ dating back to 2003, having shared the booth with Alex Niggemann, Eli & Fur, Andy Bros, Victor Ruiz and Oliver Huntemann. Upon releasing his first productions in September of last year, Kenan has since gone to showcase his music on 3rd Avenue, Soundteller Records, Stripped Digital and Stellar Fountain’s Astrowave. Now embarking on the most anticipated release of his career, Kenan makes his Eat My Hat debut with ‘Shivaya’ alongside remixes from Ziger & Simos Tagias.

Having already developed a uniquely mystical sound, Kenan has been hotly tipped as one of the progressive scene’s brightest new talents. That sentiment will surely grow with  ‘Shivaya’ delivering on a profound level. Built on a backbone of tough beats and a full, perfectly carved groove, the peak time sensibility is high from the outset. Tranquil yet energetic, it’s pulsating arps and percussive flurries add dynamic splashes as momentum builds. The narrative shifts during the break with a cross cultural vocal taking centrestage, bringing moments of soul and emotion, before a timely drop transfers energy into an exhilarating finale. 

The first interpretation of ‘Shivaya’ is provided by Eat My Hat label boss Ziger. The Greek artist has had a tremendous summer season led by his ‘Faded Realm’ single which enjoyed a month long stay a top Beatport’s Progressive House Hype tracks chart. Add to that a Beatport Top 5 for his remix of Nosh & SJ’s ‘17:17’ also coming courtesy of Eat My Hat. Also laying claim to 2019 releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Eleatics Records, Ziger now lands back on his comfortable home of Eat My Hat with a superb rendition of ‘Shivaya’. Taking a cue from the original, the energy proves to be just as palpable here. A reworked groove ripples with powerful momentum as vocal fragments and dark stabs steal the air. Stripping down into the main break, wispy atmospherics add further intrigue before broken beats and a robust roll ignite a massive third act. 

The release concludes with Simos Tagias making his label debut and providing the second and final interpretation of ‘Shivaya’. The Greek artist has been one of his country’s brightest stars in progressive house with a discography that features releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music, Movement Recordings, Proton Music and Sound Avenue. Now fresh off an EP for D-Formation’s Beatfreak Recordings, Simos debuts on Eat My Hat with a superb interpretation of ‘Shivaya’. Opting for a tough, more techno inspired approach the Athens resident focuses on electric rhythms and pulsating designs, for a perfectly dialled peak time affair. The main break showcases a cascading motif, although indistinct it's emotive appeal is strong, building in waves before the final act unleashes the full vocal for an epic finale. A massive remix from Simos which caps off another incredible release for Ziger’s Eat My Hat Music. Highly recommended.
