90s High School student Duke listened to tape cassettes of Speed Garage on his walkman.  His eyes were nearly closed, his limbs struggling to remain still, his lips beatboxing along quietly to the bassline. 

During a class experiment taking apart electronics, he brought his grandfather's old AM radio.  Unbeknownst to the Duke, this radio altho looking nothing more than an antique, had been forever transformed from the fallout of radiation from an atom bomb detonation in 1945.  As Duke plugged in the radio, a freak accident occurred.  Suddenly there was a spine shattering crash and a blinding light. 1.21 jigowatts of electricity was unleashed causing a rift in the space-time continuum, and the young Duke was transported to a parallel world, one where the past, the present and the future were all merged.

Back from his journey, the Duke is ready to unleash his Future Swing Time Machine on our world.  Duke Skellington delivers on this one in true style, providing bass-heavy house drops fused with hip hop snippets and big brass stabs.

Birmingham’s Rock 12-piece, Big Band Of Boom, have today shared their brand-new single, ‘Energy Vampire’, via Ragtime Records. Pure fun from start to finish, ‘Energy Vampire’, mixes catchy, singalong hooks with a tongue-in-cheek message.


Speaking of the new single, the band share, “Energy Vampire is about that guy at a party who drains the vibe.  Lurking in the corners, talking your ear off about crypto, or insisting everyone listen while they get their acoustic guitar.  If you don’t know an energy vampire then maybe the vampire is you…”



Talking about the recording process, the band continue, “We recorded the drums with James Bragg at Propagation House, where one of the rooms makes drums sound absolutely massive.  Getting the horns sounding right is essential to our sound, we track all 6 players as a section in big room to get the vibe, and then each musicians individually for the power. Guitars and vocals were all done from our little studio in Birmingham, which we have christened ‘Big Little Studios, because its a tiny room, but we make things sound huge.”while they get their acoustic guitar….

The track kicks off with a mega horn riff that takes inspiration from the energy of the Toxicity-era System Of A Down… with a hint of Rachmaninoff thrown in for good measure.  After adding a SOAD cover to our festival set, we found that the soaring melodies really hit hard when supported by horns!

With catchy, singalong hooks accompanying a tongue-in-cheek message delivered by virtuoso players smashing out mega riffs, Energy Vampire is pure fun from start to finish!

The original 'Thrill Ride' produced by Tom ESC & featuring the beautiful vocals of Emma Lea switches between tasty guitar hooks, fun swing beats, brass licks, and what can only be described as lush monkey island vibes.  

In his remix, Odd Chap pays homage to the original, keeping to the same vibe, but with phatter chunkier beats and a heavier electronic bassline. Produced by Tom ESC (of Electric Swing Circus) and C@ In The H@, the song plays to both of their talents, with the moving analogue brass arrangements and instrumentation, and tight modern electronic production combined.  
Summer Sun has a full brass section to give off the summer feel-good vibes, which switches between organic sections and chopped up sections, giving a juxtoposition of new and old, in a smart seamless way that sometimes makes it hard to tell what is electronic and what is analogue.  All the while Emma's vocals bring you back in time with nostalgic sun-drenched lines that everyone can relate to.
