I knew before I even asked him that McGuiness was going to dig up some of his weirdest and deepest records for this mix - not only is he intuitive at gauging what his audiences need next but he's a magician the way he levitates the perfect record from the crates - effortless. McGinnis and I have been friends since I joined the Madison based JAMS party in 2021 and forged our friendship in a number of high-octane B2Bs opening for many midwest favorites like Jeff Swiff, Christian James, Madison's beloved Jiggy, and more.  He never fails to crack me up while he captures the dancefloor in a story told through his cavernous crates.   

In this 80 minute all-vinyl escapade he demonstrates a wide musical range with some of his wonkier, moodier, and more contemplative tracks blended to perfection - a DJ who plays true to the season and the atmosphere while never compromising his diverse yet consistent sound. 

If being a nearly 100% Vinyl DJ (who rarely repeats a track), a Technics enthusiast (collector, repairman, AND broker), a party starter (Wax Appeal, JAMS), and a weekly radio host (134 and counting episodes of "The Spinzone") sounds like a lot of work you might be surprised to hang with the mastermind of it all - he's chiller than a cucumber and approaches his work with an unmistakable air of sprezzatura. 

McGinnis has been on this grind for over ten years and shows no signs of slowing down - now juggling shows in the three midwestern cities he's made a name for himself: Madison, Minneapolis, and Chicago. This is a 7 part recording of my birthday party mix at Club Der Visionaere - Berlin, last summer. 
I started in the early afternoon hours and continued till late at night.
Instead of bringing my usual record bags I asked my friends to help me carry over two crates of records that may have collected some dust and a couple of scratches but had no expiration date. 
I was standing/dancing in place for hours, yet time traveling with every needle dropped.

Founded in 1989 as a small record shop in London, Mr Bongo expanded into a record label, publisher and DJ collective currently comprised of David Buttle, Graham Luckhurst, Gareth Stephens and Gary Johnson. Closing the shop in the early 2000’s due to declining record sales and major changes in the industry, they were able to switch their main focus to releasing records as well as occasionally presenting classic arthouse films from all over the world. 

Digging up lost and hard to find gems from around the globe is their ethos and it has not changed since their opening day three decades ago. Mr Bongo’s main area of concentration started with Latin music and then a particular emphasis on Brazil. Since then, they’ve expanded to a wider range of genres such as reggae, soul, funk & jazz. Their widely successful 45s series (which includes Brazil, Africa and Latin) is a testament to their hard work in finding and re-releasing old records to a modern audience. We recently got the opportunity to chat with David and Graham from the collective and ask them a few questions. Ahead of their 30th (yes you read that right.. 30th!) anniversary, they've also put together this fantastic 2hr mix full of Brazilian gems cooked by Gareth Stephens and Gary Johnson.

Hailing from Chicago, the city which gave birth to House music Rahaan has been spinning house and disco since the 80’s when he started playing at house parties across the city.

In the 3 decades since Rahaan has become a Chicago legend, a DJ who is widely recognised for his exceptional skills behind the decks and his exquisite taste in music. Lately he has also been earning plaudits for his production skills with some truly outstanding releases.

Recently he has released on some key labels including Lumberjacks In Hell, Street Edits and Dopeness Galore. His tracks are steeped in dancefloor groove, music made by a DJ with the sole intention of moving that floor.

Rahaan is a producer who has clearly learned his trade via many hours behind the decks studying the flow of the dance-floor and the tracks which have the power to excite and enthral.

Starting off playing from cassette tapes with a group of friends under the moniker ‘Chuck Brothers’ he started to build an extensive house and disco collection in the 90’s after a move to Wisconsin. A return to Chicago in 1996 saw him start to build his stellar reputation as one of Chicago’s stand out house and disco DJs with residencies at ‘The Spot’ and one of Chicago’s best clubs ‘Buddha Lounge’. A reputation he would cement with gigs all over the globe in the proceeding years.
