Episode 4: Like fossils held in amber

Featuring Alifiyah Imani


For our fourth episode of Untaken Photographs we invited Alifiyah to present her delicately wrought drones and work on sound research as an hour long listening excavation. Alifiyah has put together excerpts from recent recordings, some older stems, and unreleased ideas. She explains, "These are motifs for reflection and quiet introspection that connected me with abstraction, the elemental nature of sound itself that is constantly flowing, and attempts to channel that abstract as a form."
“Like fossils held in amber” evokes the way sound preserves fleeting details, making Alifiyah’s work an opportunity to invite listening as a present act of excavation. Her drones, with their steady fractal-like frequencies draw out hidden colors, microscopic shifts, and the subtle structures of listening.

slime-born networks pulse through secret clay.
Life inosculates where no eyes discern,
thought grows in shadows, mapping its way.

Hands adjust the magnets’ unseen call,
currents align in fields we cannot see.
A pulse of order, calibrated small,
bridges the gap from matter to memory.

Beyond, stars bend their liquid lens,
light bends across parallax unknown.
Worlds breathe in colors that transcend
what minds can hold or science show.
