The work is a personal exploration of darkness in both a literal and a metaphorical way.  On the one hand, it is an homage to the victims of the dramatic events that were taking place throughout 2022/23 in my hometown, Kyiv, when the bombings of civilian infrastructure during the invasion led to major electricity cutoffs. With the word “Kiovia” being the denomination of the Ukrainian capital in Latin language, the idea is to evoke a soundscape of a megalopolis submerged into blackness. On the other hand, the composition reflects upon the structure of the Tenebrae, a liturgical service held at night with gradual extinguishing of candles and concluded by a loud noise in the dark.

This is the first part of a cycle that Adrian Mocanu - this year a fellow of the „Weltoffenes Berlin“ programme and composer-in-residence of the Maulwerker - is writing for the ensemble. The title „madrigali guerrieri“ (madrigals of war) refers to the title of Claudio Monteverdi's eighth book of madrigals, „Madrigali guerrieri, et amorosi“ (madrigals of war and love). Based on the general idea of the madrigal as a medieval vocal genre, Mocanu deconstructs it tonally and filters it through his own perception of wartime in Ukraine.

This work draws inspiration from Cancionero de Palacio (the Palace Songbook, a collection of a capella works from medieval Spain), intertwining an homage to Iberian Renaissance with allusions to Sephardic and Moorish musical influences, extended vocal techniques and improvisation.
"...y mis tristes ojos ciegan, hechos río" borrows its title from the vocal piece "Los sospiros no sosiegan" composed by Juan del Encina (1468-1529), incorporating poetic verses and musical quotes from it. The work additionally quotes fragments from “No pueden dormir mis ojos” by Pedro de Escobar (1465-1535) and “No queráis dormir, mis ojos'' by Juan Hidalgo (1614-1685).

Adrian Mocanu's work spans chamber, vocal, orchestral and electroacoustic music. A laureate of various prizes, including the Frederic Mompou International Award (Barcelona), the Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition (Vienna), the SGAE-CNDM Young Composer Prize (Madrid) and Azrieli Music Prizes (Montreal), he has been supported by institutions like Casa de Velázquez, JM Spain, the Ministry of Culture of France, the Schleswig-Holstein Künstlerhaus and the Berlin Senate. He collaborated with ensembles Musikfabrik, Maulwerker, Ensemble Recherche, Pinknoise, Mosaik, Barcelona Modern and IEMA-Ensemble, with his works being premiered across Europe and North America.
