Big thanks to Steve Lamacq for the introduction to Gabi Garbutt and the Illuminations (shades of Eleanor Friedberger?) mighty slab of jaunty, soulful pop that opens this week's list. Lake Jones keep the vibe going, before Thyla chugs along into the Velvet Underground sounds of Lewsberg. Run River North bring the funk, and Drama keep the danceability going before producer Subculture's hip hop leads us to Shaolin Digital's analogue-sounding dancehall. Floating Points then provide the electronic bridge to Soular Order's ambient closer. Plenty to admire this week, with four or five tracks contending for pick of the week, but in the end it goes to Gabi Garbutt and the Iluminations' "The Fool": two minutes and 17 seconds of some of the finest music you'll hear this year.

Payoh Soul Rebel is a young artist settled in Valencia, currently lead vocalist in Jah Macetas, one of the first and ground-breaking Spanish reggae bands.
His versatility can be tracked down in his recent recordings, but “Forgiveness” from Foundation EP displays his whole soulful potential.
A unique tone, invaded by the Mediterranean light and warmth.
