Duro starts the year by the bonfire with 'Piel de Oso', the first collaboration between two beloved in-house artists, Theus Mago & Tyu, and the Spanish rapper, Livia. The cut is abetted by two remixes, the first one comes from Israelis sidereal groovers, Rina X Benji. The second one by the loco weed brothers, Moisees & ZEA, a saiko rebajado track.

The opener is the original cut, an opiate and hypnotic track where Livia's flow is diluted with spirited Latin percussions, a bouncy bass, recondite and baffling melodies creating shadows between fire and smoke. Fresh from smashing the dancefloors across the globe with the genius Switchdance collaboration named 'Reak', Rina comes back to Duro alongside Benji. Cut where the duo accelerate the rhythm, creating a percussive and dreamlike night journey where animals and machines dance to the rhythm of drums and flames. 

At dawn is the version shaped by ZEA and Moisees, a cut with vocals distorted, taking Livia's voice to a Voodoo and wild spectrum. A wide bass line, accompanied by astral synthesizers, arcane melodies and acid sounds.

Up next on the decade strong Crosstown Rebels is class live act Pezzner who joins forces on ‘Exit’ with vocalist and co-producer Amina. ‘Exit’ is a charged edgy slice of disco-darkness, where the power of raw electronic stabs meets the sultry tones of Amina’s incredible Bjorkesque vocals. ‘Pipes’ is a more organic atmospheric affair of a hypnotic groove; mellow dubby textures flow into fluid, analogue melodies. Continuing Crosstown’s innovative remixers, up steps Hotflush boss and dubstep pioneer turned master of versatility, Scuba. Delivering his take on ‘Exit’ with elastic bass and an expanding soundbed of jarring chords and alternating synth lines, the result is a suspense filled and stupendous sonic ride of house-hedonism.

Seattle’s Dave Pezzner wants to tell stories and feed the brain with his dancefloor focused productions and this mantra is finely displayed here as well as on previous album works, ‘The Tracks Are Alive’ (Freerange Records, 2010) and ‘Last Night In Utopia’ (Systematic Recordings, 2013) and EPs for Crosstown Rebels offshoot Rebellion, Dirtybird, Ovum and Classic. Highly regarded across the board as a producer and live act, his work has been described as “lush and tense with a transcendental twist”

Amina is an Italian Egyptian heir to a mystical culture she grew up through the memories left by her mother a musician and composer that led to the exploration of many instruments and later an obsession with poetry. Fate led her to meet Dave Pezzner in 2011 and this gave rise to a passion project that fused Amina’s poems with a collaborative mix of eclectic and harmonic sounds that brought Amina’s lyrics alive with Pezzer’s three-dimensional sonic imagery full of tension and transmission…

Scuba needs little or no introduction. As the head of Hotflush Recordings, one of the most illustrious and genre bending labels of our times and with a history steeped in the UK dubstep scene, Paul Rose aka Scuba and SCB has been residing in Berlin since 2008 and is now a future facing figurehead in electronic music with a sonic style reaching far beyond his dubstep roots.

I Gotta Little Love - Peza Edit Lo Rez Preview

From the sweltering tropical depths of Cali, Colombia Will ‘Quantic’ Holland’s studio band Los Miticos Del Ritmo (The Mythics of Rhythm) return with an album of hip shaking, dancefloor quaking instrumental cumbias. Released on CD, LP and download on the 30th April. The LP is 100% analogue and comes with an original screen-printed front cover designed by the London based artist Lewis Heriz.

Assembled using vallenato and cumbia musicians living in Cali, Los Miticos del Ritmo are a 7 piece studio band put together by British musician, producer and now Colombian resident Will ‘Quantic’ Holland.

Covers of Queen’s ‘Another One Bites The Dust’, Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop’, The Abyssinians reggae classic 'Satta Massagana'  and Gildardo Montoya’s ‘Fabiola’ (as featured on Soundway’s ‘The Original Sound of Cumbia’ sit along side original cumbias on this feel good, house party cumbia LP.

Recorded in Will’s home studio in Cali, his approach was to produce an album with the aesthetics of 1960s tropical recordings made in Colombia and the Caribbean. Careful attention made to preserve the analogue quality of the recording at every stage.

‘The idea of the record was to record something that sounded like a lost cumbia classic,’ said Will in a recent interview with Soundway ‘Like something dug out of a Barranquilla basement after decades of humidity and dust. In a modern climate of mashups and sampling, it seemed refreshing to record something with musicians doing covers and approaching new ideas for cumbia, rather than rehashing old tricks.’

The record was recorded entirely on 4 track tape, using a process of overdubs and tape transfers to record multiple sessions at different times with different musicians. As Holland began to play the dub plates of the project in his DJ sets around the world, tracks like ‘Cumbia de Mochilla’ and ‘Another one Bites the Dust’ slowly became sure-fire dancefloor winners.

Los Mitcios Del Ritmo first saw the light of day on Quantic’s vinyl only EP ‘Hip Hop En Cumbia’, released last year through Tru Thoughts. The group includes Ancer Rada (percussion) grandson of the great Colombian accordionist Franscisco Pacho Rada, one of very first Colombian troubadours to tour unaccompanied with just his voice and accordion. The band is also compromised of Combo Barbaro regulars Fernando Silva (bass) and Freddy Colorado (percussion).

Since moving to Colombia in 2007 Will has slowly immersed himself in the musical history of the country. The much acclaimed ‘The Original Sound of Cumbia’, a 55 track compilation of Colombian cumbia and porro released on Soundway in 2011, was the result of five years of field research from Will. Simply finding and compiling old records is not however in Will’s DNA. The research is more an education for Quantic the musician who has been learning accordion for close to five years now, even taking lessons from Colombian and Panamanian accordion masters such as Anibal Velasquez and Papi Brandao.

Los Miticos Del Ritmo sees Will as an accordionist for an entire long player for the first time and must be the first traditional cumbia record recorded on tape in Colombia for many years.

New York City Born and New Jersey City based Chico Mann (aka Marcos Garcia), a multi instrumentalist and guitarist with the afrobeat orchestra Antibalas  is to release his solo ‘Manifest Tone EP’ through Soundway Records on 12th November. 

The EP represents four of the choicest cuts from Chico Mann’s ‘Manifest Tone’ Volumes 2&3 that until now were only available digitally. It signals the end of one phase and the start of a new chapter in Chico Mann’s career with a brand new album signed to Soundway Records for release in early 2013. 

The Manifest Tone journey began in 2004. During breaks from touring with Antibalas Marcos began crafting a more personal sound in his basement studio. A hybrid beast of culture and tone where Fela Kuti and Willie Colon meet Stevie B, Lisa Lisa, Afrika Bambaata and Kraftwerk, it lives in a landscape shaped by Africa, Cuba, New York and Miami.

These unique experimentations led to the release of ‘Manifest Tone Volume 1’ in 2006 and eventually morphed into Volumes 2 & 3 that were finished in 2008 and 2010 respectively. What sounds on paper like a meeting of styles past in reality emerges sounding incredibly fresh and original.

Over the three volumes Chico Mann’s own unique style has emerged and evolved (something he has dubbed 'Afro-Freestyle') and in 2010 he released the critically acclaimed 'Analogue Drift' album for Wax Poetics records. 

All of this paves the way for the arrival of his most accomplished and polished sound yet that will touch down in early 2013.

Chico Mann will also add to his list of remixes for the likes of Little Dragon and Hess is More by remixing Soundway's London based Ghanaian afro band Konkoma in December 2012.
