Live performance of The Invisible Hand at CCA Glasgow 09/05/2024 as part of Cryptic Nights.

A 17 minute sound art performance using eight looper pedals and sound sculptures made from litter and found objects. No effects were used, instead the inherent resonance of the objects was allowed to speak. The objects were played using feathers, animal bones and broken piano parts. The sound was captured using contact mics.

The Invisible Hand is a metaphor used by Adam Smith to extol the unintentional virtues of capitalism. That idea is turned on it’s head to refer to capitalism's toxic over-production and waste. The title also relates to the use of looper pedals.

About the Dawn – Brooks Grow Loud

I’ve been exploring the drone possibilities of the ronroco. Although it’s a high-pitched instrument with picked strings that produce short, percussive transients, it can be layered and softly strummed to create a surprisingly sustained sound.

In this piece, I combine those textures with my own bowed upright bass and generous layers of long reverbs,trying to create an all acoustic, atmospheric soundscape.

This recording was made in 2126 as part of Krakenkraft Interstellar Inc.'s ARP (Audio Reconnaissance Program), and its significance is only now being fully understood. We are most probably hearing the dream singers of Yith, a mentally time-traveling civilization. Unfortunately, despite intensive AI efforts, the drone's engine noise could not be removed, for which they have apologized repeatedly. Unfortunately, we do not know what happened before and after radio contact was lost...
