8 October 2023, 7.20pm: a dam fails on the flanks of Mont Mbankolo in Yaoundé. The result: 34 dead, dozens of houses destroyed and inestimable material losses. This tragedy, the result of anarchic urbanisation and negligent infrastructure management, is a tragic reminder that our urban forests are not just green spaces, but barriers against natural disasters.
