“Doula(they/them) is a DJ & producer born in Harlem and raised in The Bronx. They grew up in a family of DJs, singers, rappers, and producers who all shared a passion for music. Their early interest in Black music history introduced them to the rich forms that electronic musics take. Doula’s purpose as a DJ is to build community and share an appreciation for the transformative powers music brings to a space. 

This 120-160 BPM mix is a pretty chaotic blend of rude broken beats, electro, driven acid bass lines, ravey power techno, and jungle grooves. Honestly, if the TB-303 never existed, this mix would be 15 minutes long."

Somersault 243 (doula) “303s and Heartbreak”

Somersault makes its returns with a mini collaboration series with Brooklyns party series Drumroll Please. To kick things off is the series cofounder battymecks. 

“battymecks is a Brooklyn-based producer, DJ, creative, and event organizer. They play a wide range of genres - both new and old, yet always percussive and exciting - and have a soft spot for club and techno. Their search for new music takes the acoustics of a space and the fidelity of its sound system into heavy consideration.

Alongside @elena___xo, battymecks is the co-founder and co-organizer of the eclectic party Drumroll Please. Featured in this mix is part of a live set from the Drumroll Please Halloween party, 
with an extension added retroactively.

“I only got to play for 20 minutes because of some technical difficulties and delays in set up, so the first half is very much after the chaos of getting the music started the rest was recorded calmly in my apartment before bed. I wanted the extension to be as authentic as possible even if it wasn’t a live performance; I didn’t prepare my tracks, I just went and let it flow trying to capture my mentality while playing live."

Here we are at mix 100 of our series with an exclusive mix from none other than Chicago legend and founding father of the footwork genre, producer and DJ, RP Boo! The originator, the inspiration, and the cornerstone on which the entire genre has been built on.
    RP Boo started making tracks in 1995 inspired by the house music around him in Chicago. By bumping up the tempo of ghetto house he established a new template that lit a fire under an entire generation of dancers and producers. He created numerous unreleased tracks before experiencing his personal breakthrough with 1997's ‘Baby Come On’ – a composition many cite as the first Footwork track (find it on the Planet Mu's ‘Classics Vol 1’).
    RP Boo's essential first album, 2013's ‘Legacy’ caused a storm of acclaim worldwide as people finally started to piece together his true place in Footwork and the powerful legacy of his work as an innovator. In parallel with productions, his always on-point DJ sets have lit up festivals and clubs worldwide and continue to do so to this day, notably leading to him being named one of the ‘100 World’s Best DJs’ by DJ Mag.
    This Friday he releases  ‘Legacy Vol.2’ on Planet Mu, continuing his story. Featuring tracks created between 2002 and 2007, this is a wonderous selection of material, some known, some unknown.
    RP Boo continues to produce and tour around the world, spreading good vibes, and joy everywhere he lands. The enduring success of his music proving that there’s still no one quite like him. He is a living legend whose work has influenced us deeply. The collection of music we have chronicled would not exist with out him. We are so honored to be able to showcase a studio mix by one of our heroes! Get into the sound!
