Nehio Nibhni Live Lounge Version

Hi, I'm Raj Kaul. 

I sing, I write, and I produce. I'm so excited to share the my musical journey with you all. I love to experiment blending alternative genres with Bhangra, hence I call it alternative Bhangra.

It has been a thrilling journey so far, transitioning from an IT professional whilst leading a worship band to releasing Zor – the first of many more singles to come.   

 This is a big moment for me, and I can't wait to share the energetic vibes of contemporary Bhangra mixed with my unique brand of pulsating electronic music. I intend to do this whilst holding onto my roots of traditional Punjabi vocals and lyrics.  

My Story 

I've been in love with music for as long as I can remember. Whenever I think of how this first began my mind takes me back to those early deep-rooted memories of listening to my mother's favourite musical maestros, especially Gurdas Maan and Mohammed Rafi. They would be booming melodiously on our red and black Hitachi double deck cassette player.  

Like any other 80's child, I spent my days listening to hits such as ‘Bad’ and 'Thriller', whilst regularly tuning into BBC's weekly broadcast of 'Top of the Pops'. Growing up in Birmingham, the heart of UK Bhangra, I was also fascinated by the prominent UK Bhangra bands and the folk vibes of Punjabi music. These early experiences were a huge source of inspiration for my music.  

My earliest memories of singing were when I was about 6 or 7 years old, mimicking Bollywood classics at family parties, dotingly encouraged by my mother and massi (maternal aunt). I also enjoyed creating and composing my own versions of songs. It all started as a form of imitation. I remember listening to artists such as Apache Indian, in particular his song Arranged Marriage. As a 12-year-old I changed the lyrics to reflect eating traditional Punjabi food such as the paratha to create a parodic version of the classic. 

It was a few years later, whilst in my college days that I wrote my first proper song. I used to have one of those slimline Sony Walkman's and my bus journeys were spent listening to the latest Bhangra and Bollywood albums. It was on one of these journeys where I had a bolt of inspiration. I’m not quite sure how the composition came into my brain, but it did. Out came my notepad from my Nike drawstring bag along with a pen. As the words flowed out of my whispering mouth on the bus, Tere Na Te glassy was written. It would be another 10 years before I would go onto record the song.

My first singing teacher Meena Kumari Ji introduced me to a budding new producer called JusRitz. I remember going to his studio and instantly building a rapport with him. We teamed up on a new song based on a beat he had just produced. I composed the chorus and melody for the song. This became the first song I recorded and released as JusRitz's second single for his album. Later in the production, we decided to focus on a dance floor track Tere Na Te Glassy which eventually climbed the charts and became a number one song for three weeks on BritAsia TV. The success of my singles led me to tour the UK regularly with JusRitz. I released more singles with him and got involved in new music projects, but eventually, life took over and releasing music became a background thought. 

The Future 

A lot has changed since then, both across the world and in my personal life. The music industry has changed beyond recognition. Music is consumed in an entirely different manner today as it’s all gone digital. I have remained dedicated to my vocal training whilst experimenting with music production. 

Which all leads me to where I'm now. Today I have re-ignited my music career as an independent musician. By the grace of God, I have my own team around me now. Though it’s just the beginning at the moment, the journey has been exhilarating so far.
