Ikigai Podcast Episode 8 - Raj el Rey

Raj el Rey is an electronic music artist based in Malmö, Sweden. Growing up in Kenya, and influenced by various sub-genres within the electronic music spectrum, his style involves fusing together elements from these to create a unique journey through the realms of moody atmospheric melodies, percussive drum patterns and groovy bass lines.

Having made his name initially as a DJ, starting the journey over 10 years ago in and around his native city, Nairobi (KE), before moving further afield, Raj has recently added music production to his repetoire - applying his experience as a selector and appreciator of electronic music into crafting sounds that reflect his different influences and background.

The 2023 remix is brought to us by Raj El Rey - one foot in dubby, stripped back, Malmö-influenced minimal house, the other foot in percussive, melodic, Nairobi-influenced deep house. 

Raj El Rey - "I fell in love with the original track the first time I heard it, such a well made track by Urmet and Idd! I think it was on a dancefloor somewhere in Malmö? Coming back to life again after the pandemic. I've always been a fan of Idd Aziz's vocals, so this track hit home for me - this incredible love song in Swahili, one of the languages I grew up with back home in Nairobi."

Thankful to have had the opportunity to make my debut at Copenhagen's electronic music haven, the legendary Culture Box, a couple of weeks ago. I had the honor of serving up the opening set in the Red Box immediately after the annual Culture Box Christmas dinner, which meant that we had an active dancefloor from the very first track. Here's what it sounded like, hope you enjoy it.

Having made his debut in Nairobi's burgeoning electronic music scene in late 2010, Raj soon became known for his unrelenting groovy selections - playing everything from deep and afro house, to minimal and techno, continually refining his style while maintaining a keen appreciation for lesser-known underground sounds. 

Now based in Malmö, Raj continues to make and play music that blends elements from house, dub, disco and techno, applying his experience as a selector and appreciator of electronic music into crafting sounds that reflect his different influences and background.
