Raj el Rey - Dove Tales

The sun has always held a special place in the history of mankind - the earth's primary source of energy, one of the catalysts of life itself. Worshiped by various civilizations, under various names, the sun has captivated and inspired in immeasurable amounts. 

This two tracker EP is another entry in the millenia of odes to the sun.

Raj explains: 'Öresund Sunset is a minimal, yet melodic, deep house number, inspired by my almost religious year-round walks to one of my favorite places in the world to catch a beautiful sunset, Sundspromenaden in Malmö. Laid-back summer grooves on this, perfect for a sundowner session, a daytime dance in the sun, or the afters.'

'Solar Hypnosis is a hypnotic, minimal number, inspired by the countless times we've danced in a trance of sorts, to hypnotic, repetitive tunes in the summer sun. The focus is on the percussion to build the groove, coupled with some dubby synth stabs, a hypnotic arp and a melancholic pad, ever present throughout the track.'

Raj el Rey is an electronic music artist based in Malmö, Sweden. Growing up in Kenya, and influenced by digging through various sub-genres within the electronic music spectrum, his style involves fusing together elements from these to create a unique journey through the realms of moody atmospheric melodies, percussive drum patterns and groovy bass lines.

Having made his name initially as a DJ, starting the journey over 10 years ago in and around his native city, Nairobi (KE), before moving further afield, Raj has recently added music production to his repertoire - applying his experience as a selector and appreciator of electronic music into crafting sounds that reflect his different influences and background.

This was my entry for a remix contest - I didn't win, but wanted to share this with everyone anyway.
I tried to keep as much of the original track's atmosphere intact, while adding my own touch to it. This represents my interpretation of thinking about home - Home Calling.

I've always been a fan of Idd Aziz's vocals, so this track hit home for me - this incredible love song in Swahili, one of the languages I grew up with back home in Nairobi."

One foot in dubby, stripped back, Malmö-influenced minimal house, the other in percussive, melodic, Nairobi-influenced deep house. That’s the best way to describe Raj el Rey’s music and DJ sets - with his personal journey and influences from his two hometowns shining through all the way.

Having made his debut in Nairobi's burgeoning electronic music scene in late 2010, Raj soon became known for his unrelenting groovy selections - playing everything from deep and afro house, to minimal and techno, continually refining his style while maintaining a keen appreciation for lesser-known underground sounds.
