THE TUMBLEDOWN BLUES (LIVE @ NORTHERN NIGHTS FESTIVAL) : 
It's 2:30am and in a fast-paced, ever changing world  I’m dropping a downtempo mix that blazes a slow, achy trail across the American West. Festooned with ghost towns, rusticating prairie graves and lonesome crows, this collection of tunes lends you doleful voices, blues guitars, twangy banjos and the stuttering ragtime of vintage pianos. Its sideshow twin is the conjoined grumble and grime of downtempo bass. The cadence does have moments of upswing; ribald bar rooms and scurrying outlaws make a momentary presence. But the coffee-meets-whisky approach makes this sonic libation yet another perfect slow-sipper as the soundtrack for your wayward soul.

The first track on this mix is titled "Imperfect Offering" by my friend Marya Stark & Daniel Berkman, and it perfectly sets up this journey, along with the follow-up track, Atlas by Kayam & Maugli - its a song about embracing the darkness in order to open our eyes to what we cannot see, and reconciling the irreconcilable wonder of what we want to be...

Sometimes life is messy and INTENSE and especially with the way the world is right now...
 
Playing this set, I was deeply in my own grief around my Beloved waking up and feeling on the edge of her own fragile mortality that morning, completely overcome with pain throwing up at 4am wrestling with some sort of lunar penumbra existential rite of passage… 

And the stark realization of how we never know when we might lose someone dear to us and my having to persevere regardless of her suffering to show up for the community to share my music medicine.

It’s these moments where I go deepest into my own prayer within the alchemical cauldron of transformation facing my greatest fears & dread to bring them from the darkness of the my shadows into the light of true surrender, as I pour my heart stream into the mix which is becoming the soundtrack of my own purification. It was real primal prayer.

I was struggling energetically but a higher power was pouring through me guiding my own transformation in real time and bringing Megan and everyone on that dancefloor into the prayer field with me.

I had to surrender so deeply. I had wanted things to flow in such a different manner Sunday morning. It was deep deep deep surrender.

I am forever touched by the realness of what unfolds beyond what we think or imagine. When Spirit brings us to our edge and we discover again what we are truly made of…

"All Petals Fall"

The first track I've written since my friend Rosie passed away.

It had been a hot and dry summer, the rain hadn't fallen for weeks and the ground was parched.

Rosie's last morning was another warm and sunny one, but a couple of hours after she passed away the sky erupted with thunder and the rain poured endlessly. It felt like the world was crying with me.

I recorded the sound of the thunderstorm from that day, you can hear it in this track, along with the sound of my friend purring softly into a microphone (from when she was healthy and happy).

It continued to rain every day for 4 weeks. She was so lucky, or maybe there's a grand cosmic reason to it all. Who knows?

I hope you enjoy the track, anyway. Thank you for listening to me.
