This song carries a message of liberation from some of the painful and oppressive messages many of us have been conditioned to believe. 

"My body is a living temple of love. My body is the body of the Goddess."

Many of us have been taught that our sensuality is not sacred, that our embodiment is not holy. We are taught that to be "spiritual" or "pure" is in conflict with our sexuality. In reality, sensuality and sexuality are some of the most beautiful, divine gifts we are given as humans. While we may intellectually agree with this, the conditioning of thousands of years of patriarchy and oppression around these topics runs deep. Music has the power to penetrate aspects of our beings that words alone can't. So, a song that celebrates and affirms this truth is powerful medicine.

The tyranny of the "trance of unworthiness" is a fierce one. Most of us are bombarded with messages of self-doubt and insecurity by the mass media, our families and our culture at large from a very young age. We are taught we need to look, be and perform in very specific, usually unrealistic ways to be worthy of love. This honestly makes me want to grab a bucket and puke in it just thinking about it! 😂 Yuck! Let's clear that toxic business from our beings ASAP! 

The original words to this song, written by Michael Stillwater, are "Oh, oh, oh, I am that I am. Oh, oh, oh, I am that I am." He granted me his blessing to record this song with the agreement that I stick to his original lyrics, though he did approve my request to include my adapted lyrics at the end. That's why you'll notice this difference in the recording, compared to how we sing it live. I feel the self-love message is important, so I'll stick to those lyrics when sharing it live, fyi!

Origin: The term "Diapason Normal" represents a concert pitch standard that was close to 432Hz. The only official national concert pitch that was legally binding and close to 432Hz was set at A4=435Hz.

French Legislation: On February 16, 1859, the French government legislated the National Standard to A4=435Hz, making it the official pitch for musical performances in the country.

Historical References to 435Hz:

1825-1830: A tuning fork owned by Kapellmeister Reissiger in Dresden was set to A=435Hz.
1859: In Karlsruhe, Germany, the pitch at the German opera was A=435Hz. Kapellmeister Jos. Strauss advocated for this pitch, believing it was the least fatiguing for singers and optimal for operatic performances from all eras. This pitch standard by Strauss became the foundation for the French Commission's Diapason Normal.
1859: Various tuning forks representing the French Commission's Diapason Normal Pitch were created. These forks had slight variations but were close to A=435Hz. One such fork was presented to the John Broadwood & Sons Piano Co. in London.
In the United States, this pitch was sometimes termed "International pitch." Chickering in Boston recommended it as the ideal tuning pitch for Chickering pianos.
1859: Secretan crafted multiple tuning fork copies of the French Diapason Normal. Excluding one fork that was notably flat, the average pitch of the other forks was approximately A=435.34Hz.
Other Pitches Close to 435Hz:

1829: A tuning fork used by the piano maker M. Montal in Paris was set to A=434Hz.
Around 1834: The pitch of the Paris opera was approximately A=434Hz, while an orchestra fork in Vienna was measured at A=433.9Hz by Scheibler, termed the "Vienna minimum."
1878: In London, the standard pitch for church organs, taken from Metzler's tuning fork, was A=436Hz.
This pitch standard, while not widely adopted globally, played a significant role in the musical history of France and influenced some musical standards in other parts of the world.

Ram Dass first went to India in 1967. He was still Dr. Richard Alpert, a prominent Harvard psychologist and psychedelic pioneer with Dr. Timothy Leary. He continued his psychedelic research until that fateful Eastern trip in 1967, when he traveled to India.
