We would get on the bus, and the conductor would lead us in this chant for the entire 40 minute ride every day.  Ram Dass leads a 35 minute meditation, originally recorded January 1981, in Sydney Australia. 

Ram Dass guides a soma (divine nectar) meditation, focusing on drawing the living spirit in through the breath and body - and releasing the stuff in you that is keeping you from being with the universe: fears, negativity, doubt, inadequacy, anger, loneliness...replenishing your body with healing energy. Release the things you don't need in order to be in the spirit.

Ram Dass delves into the concept of aging and accepting the inevitability of change in our physical bodies and self images, where can we be in relation to change in a way that doesn't generate fear? 

He explores awakening as a consciousness evolution, accepting life's surprises simply as stages of growth, and not trying to stand on ground that is going to inevitably crumble beneath your feet anyway. 

Ram Dass talks about our "spacesuits," our current incarnations and how to be able to learn to develop acceptance of our roles within society, time and space in order to help fulfill our karmic paths - while not getting caught in them. 

 Exploring different countries and how their cultural moral outlooks differ from those in the United States in regard to the "common good," when are we really helping those in need and when are we simply acting out of our own ego's selfishness? 

Is it better to become a renunciate or to accept all of the "stuff" of the world and integrate it into each situation to awaken? We must honor our incarnations, to be "in the world, but not of the world" - to be in it, but not trapped in it, which we can do by cultivating the emptiness of awareness, to live in the different planes of consciousness simultaneously.

We are so often caught in the game of polarities, and we struggle under the weight of our seemingly dualistic nature.  It is the task of the conscious being to not get lost in righteousness, and to use suffering as a means to become free.  If we learn to honor our incarnation then we transcend dualism, and can then rest in the totality of existence.

In this 1974 panel discussion at the Naropa Institute in Boulder Colorado, Ram Dass, accompanied by fellow teachers Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Jim Baker, and Jim Green, discusses the different traditions and methods used to move beyond the ego. For Ram Dass it was the grace of his guru that allowed him to see beyond his own models of reality, but this is not the only path. There are many methods and practices that we can utilize, all of which can bring transformation, whether subtle or profound. The discussion closes with a question and answer period with the audience.

This meditation is drawn from Theravada (Southern Buddhism) called "Anapana" - just bringing you to right here, and it's done through the breath. Out of all of our individual differences, what is common to us is we are all breathing in, breathing out. 


Ram Dass Breathing Meditation

Ram Dass first went to India in 1967. He was still Dr. Richard Alpert, a prominent Harvard psychologist and psychedelic pioneer with Dr. Timothy Leary. He continued his psychedelic research until that fateful Eastern trip in 1967, when he traveled to India. In India, he met his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, affectionately known as Maharajji, who gave Ram Dass his name, which means “servant of God.” Everything changed then – his intense dharmic life started, and he became a pivotal influence on a culture that has reverberated with the words “Be Here Now” ever since. Ram Dass’ spirit has been a guiding light for three generations, carrying along millions on the journey, helping to free them from their bonds as he works through his own.
