The Herero and Nama genocide was a campaign of ethnic extermination and collective punishment waged by the German Empire against the Herero and the Nama in German South West Africa (now Namibia). It was the first genocide of the 20th century, occurring between 1904 and 1908.

In January 1904, the Herero people, and the Nama people, rebelled against German colonial rule. On January 12, they attacked more than 100 settlers in the area of Okahandja, and quite notably, they spared women and children, as well as all British people who were their allies at the time.

In August, German General Lothar von Trotha defeated the Herero in the Battle of Waterberg and drove them into the desert of Omaheke, where most of them died of dehydration. In October, the Nama people also rebelled against the Germans, only to suffer a similar fate.

65,000 Hereros and 10,000 Nama died in the genocide. The first phase of the genocide was characterised by widespread death from starvation and dehydration, due to the prevention of the Herero from leaving the Namib desert by German forces. Once defeated, thousands of Hereros and Namas were imprisoned in concentration camps, where the majority died of diseases, abuse, and exhaustion.

In May 2021, the German government agreed to pay €1.1 billion over 30 years to fund projects in communities that were impacted by the genocide.

Entre 1904 et 1908, environ 80% du peuple herero et 50% du peuple nama vivant sur le territoire de l’actuelle Namibie ont été exterminés par les forces du Deuxième Reich, soit environ 65 000 Herero et 10 000 Nama. Ce crime de l’histoire coloniale africaine est aujourd’hui considéré comme le premier génocide du XXe siècle.

En 1904, en réaction aux règles imposées par l’administration coloniale allemande ainsi qu’aux abus et maltraitances des colons, une révolte éclate dans le Sud-Ouest africain allemand, aujourd’hui la Namibie. 
Les forces du Deuxième Reich la répriment avec brutalité et mettent en défaite les Herero. 

Un ordre d’extermination – émis par le général Lothar von Trotha le 2 octobre 1904 – enjoint les troupes du Kaiser à tuer sans distinction, condamnant ainsi hommes, femmes et enfants. Les Nama prennent à leur tour les armes contre les Allemands et subissent le même sort que les Herero. Dans les camps de concentration ouverts en 1905, les prisonniers Nama et Herero sont éliminés par le travail et succombent à la maladie, aux mauvais traitements et à la malnutrition. 
Des crânes de victimes sont alors envoyés en Allemagne à des fins de recherches scientifiques raciales.

Aujourd'hui, les Nama et les Herero exigent des excuses et demandent réparation au gouvernement allemand pour les atrocités commises et les injustices incessantes : la majorité des fermes rentables est toujours aux mains des fermiers occidentaux.

Il aura fallu attendre un peu plus d’un siècle pour que le mot soit officiellement prononcé. 
Le 28 mai 2021, l’Allemagne a pour la première fois qualifié de « génocide » les massacres de 65 000 Herero et de 10 000 Nama.
« Nous qualifions officiellement ces événements pour ce qu’ils sont du point de vue d’aujourd’hui : un génocide », a déclaré le ministre allemand des affaires étrangères, Heiko Maas. « A la lumière de la responsabilité historique et morale de l’Allemagne, nous allons demander pardon à la Namibie et aux descendants des victimes ».
Cependant, les excuses sont jugées insuffisantes par l’opposition namibienne.
