Kalaallit Nunaat - Aqqutaaniippugut

is a politically self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The majority of the country's area consists of the world's largest island, located in the North Atlantic or Arctic Ocean. Geographically considered part of North America and geologically part of its Arctic subregion, it has the northernmost land area on Earth and is sparsely populated.

The entire population lives along the coast, primarily in the west of the country. Greenland was inhabited by Inuit in pre-colonial times before being colonized by Denmark-Norway in 1721 and becoming part of Denmark in 1814. Today, it is mainly inhabited by Kalaallit, who are of mixed Inuit and Scandinavian descent.

After more than two centuries as an isolated colony, primarily serving to supply Europe with animal oil, a Greenlandic national consciousness emerged at the end of the 19th century, and since the Second World War, the desire for self-determination has grown. As a result, Greenland was “decolonized” in 1953 and incorporated into the Kingdom of Denmark, after which extensive modernization measures were taken, which led to a revolution in the previously traditional society.

This resulted in social problems that continue to shape Greenlandic discourse today and, among other things, fueled a growing desire for greater autonomy. Greenland subsequently received autonomy in 1979, which was expanded in 2009. Since then, a public and political debate about full independence has raged.

As an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland has its own government and parliament and is politically independent from Denmark in most areas. However, full independence is currently viewed by the majority as unrealistic, as Greenland's economy relies almost entirely on fishing and, with its small but widely dispersed population and the resulting deficit between government revenue and expenditure, is financially dependent on Danish subsidies.

Sri Lanka was ruled by various local kingdoms for over two millennia until large parts of the island were colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century and then by the Dutch. Only the Kingdom of Kandy in the island's highlands was able to hold out against the colonizers. In 1815, all of Sri Lanka became part of the British Empire. During World War II, Sri Lanka served as a strategically important base for the Allies in the fight against the Japanese Empire. Since the beginning of the 20th century, there have been growing movements for independence. In 1948, Sri Lanka gained independence from Great Britain after peaceful negotiations. Since independence, the country has been burdened by the conflict between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority. Taiwan is an island nation in East Asia that is diplomatically recognized by only a few countries due to the One China Policy. Its territory consists of the main island of Taiwan (99%) and other smaller islands. This technologically advanced industrial nation, which produces well over half of all semiconductor components manufactured worldwide, has a population of approximately 23.5 million.

The Republic of China was proclaimed in Nanking on January 1, 1912, following the Xinhai Revolution on the Chinese mainland. The island of Taiwan, under Chinese rule from 1683 to 1895 and from 1895 to 1945 under the rule of the Japanese Empire, only returned to the Republic of China at the end of World War II. In 1949 – following the defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party and the founding of the People's Republic of China on the mainland – the government, elites, and armed forces of the Republic of China withdrew to the island of Taiwan. There, the Kuomintang, led by Chiang Kai-shek, established a one-party rule that lasted for several decades, maintaining a state of emergency. The second half of the 20th century was characterized by high economic growth; towards the end of the 1980s, the Kuomintang initiated a gradual democratization process. In several scales of democracy measurement, the Republic of China (Taiwan) is today, alongside Japan and South Korea, one of the most democratic states in Asia, comparable to Germany and Switzerland.

Even after the proclamation of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the government of the Republic of China initially represented the Chinese state at the United Nations and was a permanent member of the UN Security Council. As a result of the People's Republic's one-China policy, however, more and more states severed diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, which was forced to cede its UN membership to the People's Republic in 1971 with UN Resolution 2758. In 1979, the United States finally severed diplomatic relations after establishing official relations with the People's Republic (Taiwan Relations Act). Today, only a minority of the international community maintains formal diplomatic relations with the government in Taipei. The status of the Republic of China under international law is disputed and is the subject of the Taiwan conflict.

In 2024, the International Court of Justice declared in a legal opinion that Israel was occupying the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem in violation of international law. Israel must evacuate all Israeli settlers from the occupied territories and compensate for the damage caused by the occupation. The legal opinion is not binding.

From 1884 to 1916, Rwanda was a German colony as part of German East Africa. Due to structural problems, high population density, and conflicts between the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups, the country was long one of the poorest in Africa.
