The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, also known as North Korea, is a country in East Asia that encompasses the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, bordering South Korea to the south along the Demilitarized Zone, and China and Russia to the north along the Amnok and Duman Rivers. The country's capital and largest city is Pyongyang. Other major cities include Nampo, Kaesong, and Rason. Like South Korea, North Korea claims to be the sole legitimate government of Korea.

North Korea is constitutionally a socialist one-party state ruled by the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland under the leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea. The government system is described as totalitarian by human rights organizations and governments of other countries.

The country's first head of state, Kim Il-sung, used the Korean War and the August Incident to eliminate his political opponents and consolidate his power. After his death, his descendants, Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un, continued his tyranny and also adopted his personality cult. It is considered one of the most restrictive internationally recognized states of the present day. In various democracy scales, the country has consistently ranked among the lowest since measurements began. The government has been criticized worldwide for serious human rights violations, and the country is largely isolated internationally.

The Korean Peninsula has been inhabited by humans since the Lower Paleolithic period, and the first settlements date back to the Neolithic period. The first records of statehood appear in the 7th century BC. After the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea by Silla and Balhae, Korea was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) and the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). The subsequent Empire of Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910. After the end of the Japanese occupation and Japan's surrender in World War II, Korea was divided into two occupation zones by the Soviet Union and the United States. Attempts at unification failed, and the division hardened along political lines. The Korean War (1950 to 1953) sealed the division of the Korean Peninsula (see Korean Conflict).

Israel's political system is based on a parliamentary system of government. The head of government is the Prime Minister appointed by the Knesset; The head of state is the president, who predominantly fulfills representative tasks. Israel is a free, democratic, constitutional state with a strong welfare state; the country is often referred to as the “only democracy in the Middle East.” The predominantly centrally administered Israeli state is divided into six districts, which in turn are divided into 71 cities, 141 municipalities and 53 regional associations (groups of smaller towns to form administrative communities).

About half of Burkinabe people belong to the politically dominant Mossi ethnic group, who lived in several strictly hierarchically organized kingdoms until colonized by France at the end of the 19th century.
