The internal Lebanese front lines ran between Christians, Sunnis, Shiites, Druze, and Palestinians, between right-wing and left-wing forces. Israeli troops withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, and the last Syrian troops withdrew in 2005. Since then, the country's reconstruction has been hampered by its indirect involvement in the region's larger conflicts, such as the ties between Lebanese Shiites and Syria and the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as between Lebanese Sunnis and Saudi Arabia.
