Congo is a republic in Central Africa. Its capital and largest metropolitan area, located off the port city of Pointe-Noire, is Brazzaville; the country is also known as Congo-Brazzaville.

The country borders Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly the Belgian Congo or Zaire), the Angolan exclave of Cabinda, and the Atlantic Ocean. The United Nations Development Programme classifies the Republic of the Congo as a country with medium human development.

Cameroon is a country in Central Africa. It borders Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea. The country has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean in the southwest. The largest cities are the capital, Yaoundé, and the port city of Douala.

Cameroon is governed by an authoritarian regime, and freedom of expression is severely restricted. Corruption and human rights violations are widespread, with torture and arbitrary arrests occurring regularly.

On January 1, 1960, French Cameroon gained independence following a referendum and the expiration of the UN mandate and renamed itself the Republic of Cameroon. In December 1960, the 15th United Nations General Assembly decided that the trust territories should also be granted independence. This could be achieved through full independence, free association with an already independent state, or integration into an independent state. The British trustees denied their trust territories the first option—full independence. The north of the British Mandate trust territory therefore voted in a referendum to join Nigeria, while the southern part opted for federation with the Republic of Cameroon. Independence and simultaneous annexation took place on October 1, 1961. The state thus formed was called the Federative Republic of Cameroon. This is the reason why two official languages, French and English, are now recognized in Cameroon.

Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa. Around 21.4 million people live in the approximately 1.24 million km² state (as of July 2023). Its capital is Bamako. Most of the population lives in the southern part of the country, which is crossed by the two rivers Niger and Senegal. The north extends deep into the Sahara and is hardly populated.

Throughout history, there have been three empires in what is now Mali that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, after which the modern state is named, and the Songhai Empire. Mali's golden age saw the flourishing of Islamic scholarship, mathematics, astronomy, literature and art. In the late 19th century, Mali became part of the colony of French Sudan. Along with neighboring Senegal, the Mali Federation gained independence in 1960. Shortly thereafter, the federation collapsed and the country declared independence under its current name. After a long one-party rule, a military coup in 1991 led to the adoption of a new constitution and the establishment of a democratic multi-party state.

In January 2012, the armed conflict in northern Mali escalated again. In the course of this, the Tuareg rebels proclaimed the secession of the state of Azawad from Mali. The conflict was further complicated by the March 2012 coup and subsequent fighting between Islamists and the Tuareg. In view of the Islamists' territorial gains, Operation Serval began in January 2013, during which Malian and French troops recaptured most of the north. The UN Security Council supports the peace process by deploying MINUSMA. After the recent, third military coup in May 2021, the country is led by a transitional military government. This is internationally criticized, among other things, for not holding elections and for maintaining close relations with authoritarian Russia.

A new constitution was approved again in 2023.

The main economic sectors are agriculture, fishing and, increasingly, mining. The most important mineral resources include gold, of which Mali is the third largest producer in Africa, and salt. About half of the population lives below the poverty line. The United Nations Development Program lists Mali as one of the countries with low levels of human development.

Mali has long traditions in cultural areas. Especially in music, dance, literature and visual arts, it leads an independent cultural life that is known far beyond its borders.

Croatia is a democratic constitutional state in the transition zone between Central and Eastern Europe and Southeastern Europe.

Croatia's territory extends across a continental landlock, partly located in the Pannonian Plain, connected to a Mediterranean coastal and hinterland stretching along the eastern Adriatic Sea, traversed by the Dinaric Mountains, which serve as a watershed between the Adriatic Sea and the Danube Sea. Croatia's capital is Zagreb, the largest city ahead of Split, Rijeka, and Osijek. In addition to the titular nation of the Croats, national minorities are also part of the country's population, of which the Serbian minority is the largest.

Croatia's economy is heavily dependent on tourism, with tourism revenue accounting for 19.2% of its gross domestic product in 2019. Sudan is a country in northeast Africa with access to the Red Sea. It borders Egypt to the north, Eritrea to the east, Ethiopia to the southeast, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest. With an area of ​​more than 1.8 million square kilometers, the country is about five times the size of Germany and the third-largest country in the African continent. However, due to regional separatist movements and regular military coups, Sudan no longer exists as a cohesive, sovereign state.

The Republic of Sudan gained its independence from the former colonial power, the United Kingdom (Anglo-Egyptian Sudan), on January 1, 1956. In 1989, Omar al-Bashir came to power through a military coup and ruled the country as president using repressive means. His authoritarian regime regularly resulted in serious human rights violations. In 2019, al-Bashir was arrested and deposed after 30 years in office following another military coup.
That same year, the military leadership and the civilian opposition agreed on a transitional government that was supposed to democratize the country within five years. Instead, after several military coups, a civil war broke out in Sudan, during which Sudan collapsed and the capital Khartoum was largely destroyed and depopulated. Previously, over a fifth of Sudan's approximately 45 million inhabitants lived there.

South Sudan has been independent from Sudan since the 2011 referendum. Until South Sudan's independence, Sudan was the largest African country by area.

After the Soviet invasion in 1979, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan supported and financed mujahideen against the Soviet-backed government. After the Soviet withdrawal and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the mujahideen defeated this government in 1992. However, the division of power failed due to rivalries; the fundamentalist Islamic Taliban militias came to power in 1997 and rigorously enforced a radical interpretation of Islam, particularly Sharia law. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in the United States, the Taliban regime, which had sheltered members of terrorist organizations, was overthrown in the War on Terror, which was largely led by the United States. The country established itself as a democratic, Islamic republic through the 2004 constitution during the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), but was ruled authoritarian throughout its existence. Following the withdrawal of international troops at the end of August 2021, the Taliban quickly regained control of the country and proclaimed the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. There, the Taliban rule in a totalitarian manner and commit even more massive human rights violations. Among them, there are many arbitrary arrests, torture, and killings. Women are oppressed, and freedom of expression is severely restricted. Afghanistan has ranked by far last in the global Democracy Index every year since 2021.

The country has been shaped by more than four decades of civil war. The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is considered catastrophic. Many people in Afghanistan live in extreme poverty and suffer from hunger.
