Micronesia (from ancient Greek μικρός mikros "small" and νῆσοι nēsoi "islands", i.e. "Small Islands") is an island region in the western Pacific Ocean. The national territory covers only part of the island territory of Micronesia.

Micronesians refers to the inhabitants of Micronesia in Oceania.

They are closely related to the Polynesians, although the latter have darker skin.

Their culture is strongly influenced by surrounding cultures. In the east, one finds a more Polynesian culture (with chieftaincy), and in the west, a more Melanesian-Indonesian-influenced culture with chieftaincy without nobility, with the Marianas being an exception.

Today, many different ethnic groups make up the inhabitants of Micronesia, but they are all descendants of the Micronesian culture and still belong to it. The Micronesian culture was one of the last original cultures of the region to emerge. It emerged from a mixture of Melanesian, Polynesian, and Filipino cultures. A good example are the Yapese, who, on the one hand, were settled from the area around Malaysia and whose language is derived from Malay, and, on the other hand, share cultural similarities with the Melanesian peoples of the Admiralty Islands.

The lack of similar characteristics or overlap between neighboring cultures is the criterion for the Micronesian cultural area.
