The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, also known as North Korea, is a country in East Asia that encompasses the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, bordering South Korea to the south along the Demilitarized Zone, and China and Russia to the north along the Amnok and Duman Rivers. The country's capital and largest city is Pyongyang. Other major cities include Nampo, Kaesong, and Rason. Like South Korea, North Korea claims to be the sole legitimate government of Korea.

North Korea is constitutionally a socialist one-party state ruled by the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland under the leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea. The government system is described as totalitarian by human rights organizations and governments of other countries.

The country's first head of state, Kim Il-sung, used the Korean War and the August Incident to eliminate his political opponents and consolidate his power. After his death, his descendants, Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un, continued his tyranny and also adopted his personality cult. It is considered one of the most restrictive internationally recognized states of the present day. In various democracy scales, the country has consistently ranked among the lowest since measurements began. The government has been criticized worldwide for serious human rights violations, and the country is largely isolated internationally.

The Korean Peninsula has been inhabited by humans since the Lower Paleolithic period, and the first settlements date back to the Neolithic period. The first records of statehood appear in the 7th century BC. After the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea by Silla and Balhae, Korea was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) and the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). The subsequent Empire of Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910. After the end of the Japanese occupation and Japan's surrender in World War II, Korea was divided into two occupation zones by the Soviet Union and the United States. Attempts at unification failed, and the division hardened along political lines. The Korean War (1950 to 1953) sealed the division of the Korean Peninsula (see Korean Conflict).

Cameroon is a country in Central Africa. It borders Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea. The country has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean in the southwest. The largest cities are the capital, Yaoundé, and the port city of Douala.

Cameroon is governed by an authoritarian regime, and freedom of expression is severely restricted. Corruption and human rights violations are widespread, with torture and arbitrary arrests occurring regularly.

On January 1, 1960, French Cameroon gained independence following a referendum and the expiration of the UN mandate and renamed itself the Republic of Cameroon. In December 1960, the 15th United Nations General Assembly decided that the trust territories should also be granted independence. This could be achieved through full independence, free association with an already independent state, or integration into an independent state. The British trustees denied their trust territories the first option—full independence. The north of the British Mandate trust territory therefore voted in a referendum to join Nigeria, while the southern part opted for federation with the Republic of Cameroon. Independence and simultaneous annexation took place on October 1, 1961. The state thus formed was called the Federative Republic of Cameroon. This is the reason why two official languages, French and English, are now recognized in Cameroon.

Azerbaijan is a country in the Middle East (essentially; however, depending on the definition, a small part of the area is in Europe) with over 10 million inhabitants. Located between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus, it borders Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Iran to the south, Armenia to the west and Turkey via the Nakhichevan exclave, which is separated from the Azerbaijani heartland by an Armenian strip of territory. The capital and, with around 2.2 million inhabitants, the largest city in Azerbaijan is Baku (Azerbaijani Bakı), an important port city on the Caspian Sea. Other important cities are Sumqayıt, Ganja and Lankaran. More than 89 percent of the population are Shiite Muslims.

“Azerbaijan” originally referred to the Iranian region of Azerbaijan further south, while the current national territory was called Arrān and Albania. When the Russian Empire collapsed, the independent Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was proclaimed on May 28, 1918. After only two years, however, Azerbaijan fell back to the Soviet Union and became its constituent state, the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1991 Azerbaijan became independent again. There was an armed conflict with neighboring Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region until 2024.

To this day, the country is governed by authoritarian rule: serious violations of human rights regularly occur, women and minorities are oppressed in Azerbaijan, freedom of expression is severely restricted and government critics are persecuted and imprisoned.

Azerbaijan has significant oil reserves - a rapid economic boom has made it a middle-income country since 2000. Azerbaijan is also one of six independent Turkic states and an active member of the Organization of Turkic States and the TÜRKSOY community.

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia with around 7 million inhabitants, the majority of whom (around 65%) are Muslim Kyrgyz.

Kyrgyzstan is very mountainous. The country borders on Kazakhstan to the north, China to the east, Tajikistan to the south and Uzbekistan to the west. The capital and largest city with around a million inhabitants is Bishkek. Other important cities are Osh, Jalal-Abad and Karakol.

The former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan took major steps toward democracy in the 2010s. However, since Sadyr Japarov took office in 2020, Kyrgyzstan has again been ruled by authoritarian rule.

Papua New Guinea is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and encompasses the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and several offshore islands. Ivory Coast is a country in West Africa. It borders Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.

The country, which gained independence from France on August 7, 1960, was politically stable for decades and was governed by the PDCI (Parti Démocratique de Côte d'Ivoire) unity party of then-President Houphouët-Boigny. Export revenues from cocoa and coffee guaranteed relative prosperity. To this day, Ivory Coast remains the world's largest exporter of cocoa. Internal tensions led to the end of PDCI rule in 1990. With increasing economic difficulties caused by the decline in cocoa prices, conflicts escalated and led to a civil war-like situation that tore the country in two in 2002. Since the 2007 peace agreement, efforts have been made to reconcile and reunify Ivory Coast. Since then, it has been one of Africa's fastest-growing economies.

Yamoussoukro has been the official capital since 1983. The seat of government is located in the former capital, Abidjan, which remains the economic and political center of the country.

Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic states. It borders the Baltic Sea to the west and shares borders with Latvia, Belarus, Poland, and Russia (exclave of Kaliningrad Oblast). Lithuania is the largest country in the Baltic region, both in terms of area and population.

From approximately 1253 to 1795, Lithuania was a Grand Duchy, and from 1569 onward, as Poland-Lithuania, it was part of a real union. With the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, its territory passed to Russia and Prussia, which lost its share to the Duchy of Warsaw and Russia in 1807, until Lithuania became a sovereign republic in 1918 with the Act of Independence of Lithuania. After the Soviet occupation (1940), interrupted by the German occupation (1941–1944), it regained its independence in 1990. North Macedonia has been a member of NATO since March 27, 2020, and has been a candidate for accession to the European Union (EU) since 2005. North Macedonia has one of the weakest economies in Europe and is undergoing a process of transformation, both economically and politically. The country is struggling with high unemployment, weak infrastructure, and a lack of investment.

In 2004, Slovenia joined the EU and NATO, and in 2007 it also joined the Eurozone. The country is a democratic parliamentary republic.

The area of ​​today's Slovenia was settled at the beginning of the 6th century by the Slavs, who founded the Principality of Carantania. In 788 the Franks conquered the area and the dioceses of Aquileia and Salzburg evangelized it. In the 11th century the country was incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire and elevated to the Duchy of Carniola in 1364. In the following centuries the territory came under the Habsburg Monarchy. After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, the former crown land was absorbed into the newly founded Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
