Georgia is a Eurasian state in the South Caucasus, located east of the Black Sea and south of the Greater Caucasus. It is bordered by Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, and Azerbaijan to the east. The regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are occupied by Russian forces and are not under the control of the Georgian government. With around 3.7 million inhabitants (2020) in an area of ​​57,215 km² (excluding the occupied regions), Georgia is rather sparsely populated. About a third of the population lives in the capital region around Tbilisi; other major cities include Batumi, Kutaisi, and Rustavi.

The former Soviet republic encompasses mountain villages in the Caucasus as well as beaches on the Black Sea. Famous are the sprawling 12th-century Vardzia cave monastery and the ancient wine-growing region of Kakheti. The capital, Tbilisi, boasts diverse architecture and a labyrinthine old town with cobblestone streets.

The Georgians call their country "Sakartvelo" in Georgian, which roughly translates as "Land of the Kartvels." The word is said to originate from the god Kartlos, the progenitor of the Kartvels, who was worshipped in pre-Christian times.

The Georgians are one of the few peoples for whom no migration has been documented to date. It is certain that Georgia was already inhabited in the Paleolithic period. Recent archaeological excavations in eastern Georgia attest to cultivation 1.8 million years ago, long before the settlement of Central Europe. This includes the spectacular discovery of the oldest European humans in Dmanisi.

Slightly further south, in present-day Turkey, lies Mount Ararat, the legendary landing site of the Ark. According to historical sources from the 11th century, the Georgians trace their origins to the mythical ancestor Kartlos, the son of Targamos, who was a great-grandson of Noah (Genesis 10:1-2). The native name for Georgia is "Sakartvelo" (English: Sakartvelo), "Land of the Kartvelians."

Kartvelian tribes are mentioned as early as the 12th century BC. The first mention of the region dates back to the 2nd century BC in Assyrian cuneiform inscriptions. Urartian sources report the state structure "Diaochi" as their first unified union (Heinz Fähnrich, German cultural historian). The Greeks called the people Taochi (Xenophon, Anabasis, IV, 71); the territorial designation Tao persisted until the 20th century.

The capital, Malé, has a bustling fish market, restaurants, and shops along the main street, Majeedhee Magu, as well as the 17th-century Friday Mosque, a mosque carved from white coral.

Turkmenistan is a state in Central Asia. Turkmenistan lies on the Caspian Sea and borders Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iran. At 488,100 km², the landlocked country is about the same size as Spain, its landscape is primarily characterized by the Karakum Desert and it has the fourth largest natural gas reserves in the world.

According to the census at the end of 2022, the sparsely populated state had 7,057,841 inhabitants, the majority of whom were Muslim Turkmen. The capital and largest city in the country with around one million inhabitants is Ashgabat. Other important cities are Türkmenabat, Daşoguz and Mary.

In 1991 the country declared its independence from the Soviet Union. In the following years, the first President Saparmurat Niyazov, who had previously ruled the then Soviet Republic since 1985, established a totalitarian system that still exists today. Turkmenistan is therefore considered one of the most restrictive, internationally recognized states today. The human rights situation is extremely critical, for example freedom of expression is severely restricted. In various democracy scales, the state has consistently occupied one of the last places since the beginning of the measurements until today.

The economy relies heavily on natural gas, which accounts for a majority of gross domestic product and exports. Despite the resources, the domestic economy remains constrained by government control and limited foreign investment. Socially, Turkmenistan has made progress in living conditions but faces challenges such as human rights violations and unequal distribution of economic benefits. Internationally, it pursues a policy of neutrality and maintains close economic relations with China.
