North Macedonia is a landlocked country in Southeastern Europe. It is partly located in the northwest of the historical region of Macedonia.

North Macedonia has been a member of NATO since March 27, 2020, and has been a candidate for accession to the European Union (EU) since 2005. North Macedonia has one of the weakest economies in Europe and is undergoing a process of transformation, both economically and politically. The country is struggling with high unemployment, weak infrastructure, and a lack of investment.

According to the results of the national census of September 2021, in addition to Slavic Macedonians, who make up 58.44% of the total population, there is a large minority of Albanians at 24.3%. Of the remaining inhabitants, 3.86% are ethnic Turks, 2.53% are Roma, 1.3% are Serbs, 0.87% are Bosniaks, and 0.47% are Vlachs. Ethnically motivated conflicts continue to occur, especially between Macedonians and Albanians, but after the civil war-like conditions in 2001 and the peace treaty signed afterwards, the overall situation in the country has improved significantly.

Lebanon is a country in Western Asia on the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south along the Blue Line. To the west, it is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon is considered part of the Mashreq and the Levant. In 2022, it had a population of approximately 5.5 million, almost half of them in the capital region of Beirut. The next two largest cities are Tripoli in the north and Sidon in the south.

Originally the land of the Phoenicians, Lebanon, like the entire Levant, became part of the empire of Alexander the Great in ancient times, later of the Roman Empire, and during the Islamic-Arab expansion between 634 and 640 AD, part of the Arab world, to which it remains to this day. Its population speaks Arabic and belongs to various Islamic and Christian denominations, with the Christian population being particularly high compared to that in other Arab countries (estimated at just over half of the total population after the founding of the Lebanese state in 1943, today just over 40%).

The 1943 National Pact established a political system in which specific positions and offices were assigned to different religious groups according to a fixed distribution key (religious proportionality). Following an economic boom that earned the country the reputation of being the "Switzerland of the Middle East," lingering tensions between the population groups erupted in 1975 into a civil war that lasted until 1990, during which time the two neighboring states, Syria and Israel, occupied Lebanon. The internal Lebanese front lines ran between Christians, Sunnis, Shiites, Druze, and Palestinians, between right-wing and left-wing forces. Israeli troops withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, and the last Syrian troops withdrew in 2005. Since then, the country's reconstruction has been hampered by its indirect involvement in the region's larger conflicts, such as the ties between Lebanese Shiites and Syria and the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as between Lebanese Sunnis and Saudi Arabia. The former Christian dominance has diminished due to emigration, while the influence of the Iran-backed Islamist Hezbollah has grown in recent years.

Since 2019, Lebanon has been mired in a severe economic crisis. The Lebanese state accumulated nearly $90 billion in debt by 2020, and an estimated one-third of the population is at risk of starvation. The food supply situation is strained, partly due to the approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees, the world's largest proportion of refugees relative to the total population of any country.

The country is rich in oil reserves, particularly in its coastal regions. Although this makes per capita income one of the highest in Africa, wealth is very unequally distributed: revenues from oil production benefit only a small, politically influential elite, and the poverty rate is high.

Senegal is a country in Francophone Africa, Senegal lies at the western tip of continental Africa. Parts of Senegal have been part of the Islamic world since the 11th century. More than 95 percent of the country's population is Muslim. There is a strong Christian minority in southern Senegal, as Portuguese sailors and members of other European colonial powers established trading posts and mission stations along the coast since 1445. The Europeans, whose dominance on the coast changed hands several times, traded—not least the slave trade—with the empires that alternately controlled the interior until France began to bring these empires under its sovereignty through diplomatic and military means in the 19th century (see here). Thus, Senegal became a French colony in 1895. On August 20, 1960, the Republic of Senegal was proclaimed, enshrined a multi-party system in its constitution, and became one of the few democratically governed states on the African continent.

From the 1980s onward, dependence on a few export goods such as peanuts, phosphates, and fish, rapid population growth, and national debt led to impoverishment and growing social tensions in the formerly prosperous Senegal, which, since 1982, were compounded by the secessionist efforts of the Casamance region. As a result, Senegal became dependent on loans from industrialized and oil-producing countries, as well as on development aid.
