Paris is the capital and, as an agglomeration with the municipal association Métropole du Grand Paris and the surrounding areas of the Île-de-France region, the largest metropolitan area in the country, ahead of Lyon, Marseille-Aix-en-Provence, Lille and Toulouse.

Emerging from the western part of the Frankish Empire, France expanded its cultural and military influence in Europe during the Middle Ages, mostly in rivalry with the Kingdom of England and the Holy Roman Empire, until France finally achieved a European leadership role in the 17th and 18th centuries held supremacy.

The political and cultural impact was significant: the court of Louis Development towards democracy interrupted by setbacks.

France twice built a colonial empire overseas. In terms of nominal gross domestic product, it is the seventh largest economy in the world. The standard of living, level of education and life expectancy are considered high. As the most visited country in the world, France receives around 83 million foreign tourists per year.

The French armed forces are among the seven strongest in the world and were the third strongest in NATO in 2023, and the fifth strongest in 2024 after the USA, Great Britain, Turkey and Italy. The country is the only nuclear power in the European Union, one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and in 2010 had the third highest number of nuclear weapons in the world. It is a founding member of the European Union and the United Nations, a member of the Francophonie, the G7, the G20 , NATO, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Latin Union.
