Congo is a republic in Central Africa. Its capital and largest metropolitan area, located off the port city of Pointe-Noire, is Brazzaville; the country is also known as Congo-Brazzaville.

The country borders Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly the Belgian Congo or Zaire), the Angolan exclave of Cabinda, and the Atlantic Ocean. The country was completely destroyed by the Korean War and became one of the poorest in the world. From 1962 onwards there was a rapid economic upswing. The “Miracle on the Han River” transformed South Korea from a poor agricultural country into a highly modern, rich industrial state (“Tiger State”) within just a few decades. South Korean industry dominates the global market, especially in the production of ships and electronic products (such as semiconductors, microchips, flat screens and computers). Popular demonstrations led to the ouster of the Rajapaksas and democratic constitutional reform in October 2022.
