Back in 90’s San Francisco; Scott, Gavin and Robbie Hardkiss helped pioneer the American EDM/Rave scene with their club nights, warehouse parties and groundbreaking record label. They forged a new direction for dance music with a string of vinyl releases culminating in the seminal compilation, DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR. 

DELUSIONS made the Billboard dance charts, went to #1 on the Rolling Stone alternative album chart and launched the international DJ/production careers of the Hardkiss brothers.

Reunited in the Bay Area three years ago, Gavin and Robbie have produced a new album that stands tall in the often repetitive world of electronic dance music. Named for the year the Hardkiss collective was formed, 1991 references the sounds and sentiments of their early rave days while exploring new musical directions.

Charlotte The Baroness & Cle Acklin (SoundProof Records) combined each of their unique takes on dance music and had fun in the studio producing this original track. House Grooving and Acid Weaving, "The Call" will make the Booty Move. Due to "technical difficulties" the track was never released. So after many requests, it is now available for a free download. It was 1993 and I'd been d'j'ing since the late 80's but was tiring of the predictability and lack of imagination in a lot of what was commonly labelled 'dance music'.....

And then I discovered the Hardkiss label.....

When I heard 'The Trip' by Ultraviolet Catastrophe, I was truly blown away by what i heard, it was an amalgam of electro, acid house, breakbeat and, to me, very psychedelic. Music for your feet AND your head. Plus, the sleeve art was out of this world, you could sit and study the sleeve while listening to the music, like a proper record.

Hawkes '3 Nudes In A Purple Garden' followed, cosmic spaced-out disco with a killer sax line on the '3 Nudes Have Sax On Acid' mix by Scott Hardkiss but NOTHING prepared me for the first God Within release 'Raincry' [possibly the best dance record ever made] - it started off with a sample of the sea sounds and The Who's 'Love Reign On Me' vocal from the 'Quadrophenia' soundtrack - that was enough for me, I was hooked and what followed was an breakbeat driven widescreen epic tune that still sounds as devastatingly beautiful as it did 20 years ago, trance-like but not trance in the euro-synth pop use of the term.

The second God Within release 'The Phoenix' was another epic track, complete with a guitar riff lifted from E.L.O's 'Out Of The Blue' album, Even now I defy anyone to stand still when that tune is played. So many other great tracks have come from Hardkiss since then, and some truly inspired remixes by Scott, Robbie and Gavin. Hardkiss music really spoke to me and it still does, 20 years later. It's so much more than just 'dance music' it's clear that the hardkiss crew were [and still are] music fans with wide ranging taste and dangerous record collections.

Anyone who samples The Who and E.L.O. and does it so well will always get my vote.

I put this mix together today as a tribute to Scott Hardkiss who died suddenly 2 days ago. The mix starts with Scott's splendid production work on Dean and Britta's cover of the Nico tune 'I'll Keep It With Mine' before moving into territory more typical of the Hardkiss sound.

R.i.p. Scott, we'll miss you xxx.

Derek Random is the alter-ego of me, Steve 'Griffo' Griffiths from Birmingham, UK - I'm also known as Rafa LaRocka, The Flow Mechanik and Wolf Hackmine.

I started dj'ing in the late 80's and was resident at Bonkers in Birmingham in '89 [the only weekly house/techno/hip hop in Birmingham at that time.

I dj'd for the Raymondo's parties which eventually became the global glam clubbing behemoth that is now Miss Moneypennys. 

I dj'd in Tenerife in '89 and Turkey in '90 and then went on to be resident at the short lived Dance Factory in Birmingham . 

I was resident dj for 'Splosh Soundsystem' throughout the 90's in the midlands which had regular link ups with D.I.Y. and Smokescreen. 

In the late 90's I formed 'Freak Da Funk' with 'Hippy Chris' which specialised in parties in unconventional venues such as beaches, snooker halls and sheds in fields in Cambridgeshire.

I now live in Andalucia and still work on my own music under the aliases The Flow Mechanik, Derek Random, Rafa LaRocka and others.

The personal high point of my dj'ing life is Gavin Hardkiss using my Scott Hardkiss tribute mix during his Valencia Radio 'In My Boom' show during his Scott Hardkiss tribute.
